Eeek I'm having a home check tonight from rescue centre - what can I expect ?

I conduct home checks for rescue centres - basically I am given a booklet to fill in about the prospective owners, these are things along the lines of; how many children in the house, will children be visiting, current pets, do they have a garden, do they work full time, etc. I then have a tour of the house (normally just the downstairs/area the dog will be in) shown where the dog will sleep (kitchen/utility/lounge) and check that the garden is dog proof.

At the end of the day the societies want you to have a dog, no one is trying to trip you up. I really just check the family are prepared, know what responsibilities it involves, and that their house is a suitable size for the size/type of dog they want (I had a lady living in a studio first floor flat wanting a GSD once - she had told the rescue centre she lived in a ground floor one bedroom flat).

Good luck, I am sure it will be fine!

OK thankyou. There are some things i'm nervous of. She is bringing a cane corso with her whom she has rescued and I'm hoping my own dog is well behaved as this will be in his territory.

Also things like the river bank, will they think great somewhere to paddle and swim or will they think crikey a dog could drown ???

Ah well we'll see.

You have made me feel better though and if they think we're not suitable at least i've tried to do my bit for the pound.

What I would do is explain to the lady when she arrived "do you mind if I bring my dog out to meet yours outside first, as this is his house and I don't want him to feel threatened by a strange dog coming straight into his territory" - this is not at all suspicious, but very, very sensible, and will show her that you understand doggy psycology. I had a lady adopt a new dog, and lock her current dog outside whilst the new dog got used to the house - when the old dog was let in, all hell broke loose! Luckily it resolved itself, and the dogs live happily together now.

I wouldn't automatically think "a dog could drown" but I would be looking for some sort of fencing the other side of the bank, as I would worry the dog could escape across the river (of course depends on the size of the river).

Good point, there is post n rail the other side of the river bank so dog can't escape off the property but the river is not fenced itself. Its about 12 - 15 foot wide and not particularly fast flowing but still I guess a potential hazzard. It does however have a cove bit for paddling so somewhere to get out if something should fall in. Never happened before but who knows.

I think i'll just see what happens I'm happy to make some adjustments.

Can totally understand how you feel:) - I had The Labrador Rescue people come and look at me and my house last year - I rushed around doing housework and everything!!:D They turned up sat down in the garden declared it Labrador heaven filled in the forms and left!!:D

I was most put out:p - all that housework for nothing *sigh* still it didn't stop them delivering Max 3 days later............:D:D:D

Lol that was me yesterday but yay i've been accepted.

Just got to meet the dogs now. My own little dog was a star.

How was the Cane close up?? I'm a HUGE fan of Canes!!!!

He was an absolute beauty, a really super dog. I've never met one before and I was expecting a dog the size of an English mastiff but he was like a very large lab. He played fantastically well with my dog who fitted neatly under his tummy.
You would need loads of space though he was very bouncy and energetic.

I am hoping to rescue a bullmastiff but I wouldn't be averse to a cane having now met one :D

Ultimately my dog will choose who we have as his needs come first.

Was just going to post to offer advice, but too late, great news it went well. Hope you soon find a suitable dog.

Thankyou very much. I'm excited now but I'm going to take my time and wait for the right one, its very easy to get the first one available but this is a lifelong commitment so i want to get it right.

I think that will be my dog for my later years lol well after 40 :p my mum lives in Italy and is friends with a good owner/breeder out there so will probably get one from him if I do.

What I really wanted was a Dogo, alas thats not going to happen so Cane it is :)

Well done on your passed homecheck, I remember mine being a tad unnerving!!

LOL he was a physically powerful dog so its important to train them correctly and not use that power against you. The lady who had him was training him really well. On one occasion he walked in front of her shoulder and she wiggled the lead at him and he took 3 paces back to get into alignment with her. I was impressed.

ok I'm confused now because i've googled cane images and there seems to be different dogs. Some look like large labs and some have docked tails and pointy ears.

Ah that makes sense. hers was the latter one with the floppy ears. I can see that even the size he was he has a lot of growing to do as he was only one.
Beautiful dog though.
