My horse hasn't usually had that much trouble with loosing shoes even through winter, hes had the odd one but hasnt ever horse. However lately hes been loosing them quite often, iv tried farriers formula, and supplement from osmands made no difference, i put cod liver oil on up to 2 times a day.
However my farrier has told me to dilute stockholm tar and but on 2-4 times a week for a few weeks after hes been shoed. Iv read up on it and the views are mixed some say its good for hydration and kills bactia in the old nail holes which sounds perfect for him as the cracks in his hoves are because his feet are way too dry. Others say it can over hydrate and can act as a perfect place for bactia to actually grow and break down the hoof wall.... help

We use it, in moderation, something I got from the previous generation.

Moderation is the key as with anything I think.

I use twice per week if that helps. I'm not a vet,but in afew decades all seems well.

when I was a child, all the hoof oils had a lot of stokholm tar in them. You have been told to dilute it, because when it gets cold, it literally sets solid ! I think a lot of people are having trouble with shoes this summer because the grass is making their feet grow so fast. I always thought it's benefit was as an anti bacterial, for things like thrush, rather than for hydrating their feet.
