With summer on it's way, all the numpties have started to come out from under their rocks to feed, handle or allow their dogs to wander into pony paddocks to wreak havoc with ponies that they neither own nor have any connections to.

Here's some idea's for field signs that may help explain - to those numpties - why they must not interfere with your horse:

Anyone else use field signs that go beyond the words "DO NOT FEED" ?

Yes. We once had a sign, something like..."We are Thomas and Cavalier. We like tit bits but are not allowed sweets, and are only allowed carrots or we will be ill. Please feed us carrots."

We could never have stopped them being fed, but they did have carrots from that time on. Happy horses, happy people.

Otherwise we would have double fenced them away from people, but that would have been a shame as they shared the love!

I did try putting grass nuts in a shed for a 'repeat offender' that refused to stop feeding them carrots and apples, despite the fact one of the pony's has Cushings and therefore, prone to laminitis. That worked! But, it was a special arrangement because they simply did not respect the "DO NOT FEED" rule.

Personally, I would have preferred it if they had respected my wishes. But, some people are just plain selfish and don't really care about your animal's welfare - just themselves.

I think your sign was a good move. Thanks for sharing.

Many years ago I kept a horse in a field opposite a row of cottages. I would frequently find a big pile of grass cuttings in the field which I then had to remove. No-one admitted to being the offender so I made a 'Grass Cuttings Kill Horses' sign with small print explaining colic for those who got close enough to read it. It solved the problem.

Oooh! It's the forum police :D

Nope! Not advertising. Just discussing, having stumbled across these quirky signs on t'internet. :)

Happy now?? ;)

Good sign.

Did your sign invoke folks to engage in a discussion about horses and lawn cuttings, to gain more knowledge about the dangers? Even if no one took responsibility for the deed?

A dog walker started a conversation with me about Atypical myopathy in horses from Sycamore trees, the other day. She was astounded when she'd read about how dangerous they were for horses. She's in no way horsey but, was very interested in finding out more about it. A little knowledge can go a long way :)

A couple of dog walkers commented on the sign as they didn't know about colic and how dangerous certain foods can be.
