Ted has been put on a trial of Danilon for a month to see if it helps him with arthritis and stiffness that has led to him tripping frequently. The danilon seems to have had a massive effect. Ted has gone nuts and is behaving like a lunatic, albeit a happy one! He now runs out of the stable in the morning and gallops around the field, finds everything exciting and is very active.

He is having less feed now as he is on a diet, and yet seems full of it! He is better under saddle although jogs at the start of our hacks until he has had one trot and then settles again. He hasn't tripped at all, but is still stiff to start with.

Have any of you had similar ott behaviour from putting yours on Danilon?

Obviously pain was making him dull and quiet - hence Danilon having such a change in behaviour! Have had a few clients who dont want to keep their horse on it as he gets too full of himself - but imo if it makes that sort of difference to him, then keeping him off it is surely a welfare issue.

Agree with Glenruby, the pain was making him quiet and lacking ooomph!

I've noticed this in quite a few horses, Bute can have the same effect. I now look at quiet horses and wonder if they are in any discomfort or not? I'm sure not all of them are, but I look at them through different eyes having seen the effect on a horse suddenly free from pain.

It's good to know he's feeling better

The vet didn't think it would make much difference to his stiffness and tripping, but suggested it was worth trying anyway. We never expected it to have such a huge effect as he never appeared in that much pain before- he is a drama queen and usually lets us know if he's not happy and in pain by throwing me off.

I think I must of forgotten what he could be like when he was younger, I assumed he had calmed as he had got older, but perhaps he was uncomfortable. Now he's just harder work but I'd rather that if it means he's very happy.

My Vet told me that it was not a problem at all, when I started to worry, as Motor has been on 1 Danilon a day for the last 18 months ... he is 29 on the 20th May!. She said it was less a problem, than a human being on an Aspirin a day ....

If he seems happy and bouncy again, I would just leave him on it ..... good luck and enjoy having a happy horse again :-)
