Effol hoof ointment v's Kevin Bacon hoof dressing

I dunno about the above but I've just started using Eqyss MegaTek Rebuilder on my girl's hooves - you don't need much at all, and it smells amazing - so far it seems to be working a treat!

I am unsure if you want a thorough moisturisation though - it may not work as well for that as it sinks in very quickly.

My mare is barefoot and we have a gravelly drive to walk between the field and yard so she tends to get a lot of chips in the summer so I use Kevin Bacon daily to moisturize and stop them getting so brittle.
I am going to get some Biotin too to help but was just pondering as to whether or not try another brand of hoof moisturizer :)

How funny!
I was thinking the exactly same thing so will be following with interest.

The lady at the yard we moved to a few months ago, (from Somerset to New forest if this gave a connected to hoof Heath!) She uses Kevin Bacon, I've always used Effol although until a few weeks ago I was out of the habit of putting it on.
So I too wondered of I should change to Kevin Bacon.
His hooves have been dry and cracked but think it's the weather and I've got back into a routine of putting the Effol on.
Once finished though which should I buy?

Smellsofhorse - How do you find the Effol? Does it moisten the hooves at all? I really rate Kevin Bacon so wonder if I should stick to what I know lol

I used to use Effol but my farrier insisted I change to Kevin Bacon (his words: "Effol does F'All"). I do think KB is better for moisturising but I do put it on every single day.

the best thing iv'e found with my BF horses is to keep their hooves as rounded as possible, iv'e tried loads of different oils as my horse in particular has dry hooves which chip badly every summer,Effol wasn't very successful at all but this summer has been the driest so far where i am in France and now that i'm rounding them off more his hooves are the best iv'e ever seen them!
Biotin will certainly help but not straight away, 6+ months
i have an oil i quite like , it's natural from bay leaves, i seem to recall kevin bacons might be bay leaf too?

of the two I prefer KB

I am more than a bit in love with Hoof Moist at the moment though, its literally a white cream that you slather on the hoof and it is working very well

I've used Effol for the last 10ish years! last year my farrier told me that Kevin Bacon was better! I thought, why would I buy hoof stuff that's named after an actor! Plus its really expensive, so I've not tried it! still have loads of Effol left!

and my farrier said the horses hooves were in great condition last time, so its can't be that bad haha

Oh and I have the summer one for this time of year and the normal one when its not so dry!

Can anyone tell me what's actually in the Kevin Bacon?? Tub says animal fat and bay leaves I think? Could we get nice moisturised hooves by brushing lard on our hooves?? (I'm not being facetious, I genuinely want to know!)

I have no idea what's in it, but everytime I get it out, my dog and horse both strain to lick it where ever I put it so whatever it is must be tasty!

I really like the kevon Bacon, it does seem to work a bit but I do worry about the feet cooking if its a sunny day, almost like the idea of using baby oil on manes in summer cooking the mane? I could be totally off and just making stuff up here mind lol

I must admit I stopped in the tack shop yesterday and had a look at the NAF hoof moist... any more reviews on this? I think I am probably fighting a losing battle with her feet in the summer, they are probe to getting dry every summer, but I just want to try and avoid as much chipping as possible!

Oh and is there a difference on the NAF to "black" or "Natural"?

the natural is a white cream, I use a hoof oil brush to put it on the hooves leaving quite a lot of residue but after a short while it looks clear. the black stuff is black tinted for dark hooves (if you like that look)

The thing I would say is that its only creamy thickness so a tub probably wont go as far as an ointment would but I have two ponies and am lavish with the stuff and am still using a tub bought a month ago

Oh ok, I wondered if there was a difference in the actual product but if its just for looks that makes it easier to choose!

Do you find it moisturizes the hooves nicely and helps with cracking in summer?

Also any thoughts on Red Horse Hydrohoof? Never heard of it being used but am a fan of Red Horse hoof products so just had a look at their site and found this!

'Kevin Bacon' - I think there is a clue in the name :-) I too have wondered if I could just use lard but that is, of course, beef fat so not the same.

My farrier says the only product he recommends is the Kevin Bacon. I know it's only like us using hand cream, because it's diet and health that counts when it comes to skin/hoof health; but I apply KB most days when it's dry and think it definitely helps. (Apply to the horse, not my hands!)

I'm glad someone mentioned the bay leaf as I've just got to the bottom of my first tub and wondered how it got there! I have recently bought the black KB one and it seems to be the same other than the colour, but not used it a lot yet as finishing up the natural one.

I have also used NAF Hoof Moist in the past, and it was ok and seemed to do the job, but am happier with KB as it is a bit more 'solid' and doesn't fly off the brush as much (but be warned that if it's cold, the KB can get a bit too solid).

The annoying thing I have found about Kevin Bacon is it melts and then uses quickly! Mine is inside the barn but still melts when its warm and it is going down pretty fast

This Kevin Bacon was an Australian Olympic show jumper!

I used to use effol but didn't rate it that much as my mares feet used to still chip. Since using kevin bacon they have been really strong, even farrier keeps saying she has great feet.

It is mostly lard.

I have found that no topical treatment really makes any difference to my horses' hooves. The thing that really worked was going on the proper 'bf' diet, so no molasses, no commercial mixes or nuts and no alfalfa for one of mine in particular. Any hard feed they get comprises of all/some of the following; plain straw chaff, oats, micronised linseed and unmolassed sugar beet, plus the most important ingredient a proper BF vit&min supplement (eg Pro Hoof, Pro Balance, Forage Plus, Equivita etc...).

OK you have to wait for the new horn to grow down to form a new hoof capsule as the new diet only helps the new growth, but they have fantastic horn quality now.

The KB was eaten by the mice and I won't need to replace it with the same or any other make.

I've just asked my friend that lives in New Zealand and she has told me to use "Worlds best hoof oil" as that's what she uses out there. I've found it on Ebay and its not a bad price and you only have to apply 3 or 4 times a week so may give it a go.

Faracat - My mare has been barefoot years and she is getting next to no food at the moment except grass as not doing much work. I was thinking of adding in Biotin to see if that helps

Biotin alone generally isn't enough, especially as UK grazing tends to be high in iron and low in copper and magnesium. Using a proper supplement (like the ones I listed) should make a much bigger difference to the horn. Mine are funny and will eat their supplement in just a handful of straw chaff with a sprinkling of oats.

Just looking at Pro Hoof on Progressive earth on Ebay, am I right in thinking a 1.8kg bag would last 310ish days at 1 scoop a day? I am having a mind blank lol

Edited to add - the above was a pretty stupid question and in fact 31 days haha whoops!!

Same, mine's at the top and I did wonder! Love the stuff though. Goes on like white grease but soon turns clear. I always use it before going in the sand school and try to remember to use it daily anyway, his feet always look less dried out the following day.

I had the liquid before but I think I prefer the grease.
