Eggs for feet - anyone heard of this?

speaking to a very old fashioned hunting/showing friend of mine some time ago, I was complaining about the state of one horse's feet, and we were discussing which supplements for improving horn quality

she said eggs.... one whole fresh egg broken and stirred into the feed....

anyone heard of this?
 
I can remember giving my old pony a egg in his feed once a week, also had guiness in his feed at christmas.
That was a long time ago though and dont know if it has any benefit. He seemed to enjoy the guiness tho.
 
Hadn't heard that one, but it's worth a try - and a lot cheaper than some remedies. We have an old TB who's the perfect example of "no hoof, no horse" - in fact the farrier might as well live here - so we'll give it a whirl. We're great believers in Guinness at Christmas, so perhaps adding the egg wiill make it a Prairie Hoofer!
 
Never heard of it but i too used to give my pony a raw egg in his feed years ago for protein!?

A tip for hooves i had off a very similar sounding "old school" person (who's husband is a farrier) was to add a sachet of powdered gelatine to your horses feed every day.
Its a very cheap option- However when i mentioned trying it out at my yard one person was horrified as it is of course an animal product and horses are herbivore but i guess thats personal preference-
 
the theory behind feeding eggs is that a) they contain biotin and b) some of the fatty acids and peptides that they contain are also in the keratin in the hoof... how digestible or how useful is another matter, and sujbect to some debate.

certainly, if the eggs are good (not off) then it won't do much if any harm to the horse.

I know people who routinely feed their horses a cube of (vegetarian) jelly concentrate to help with feet!
