Hi All,

I posted some months ago about my 25yo (now 26yo TB Gelding) who was newly diagnosed with Cushings. We were negotiating the pergolide veil, and you guys were so beautiful with your advice and support.

As a bit of a development with regards to my horses health, we've had a new diagnosis.

The horrendous weather we are having in Australia over the last few weeks has triggered an eye ulcer in my boy. This would be the 10th? 15th? Eye ulcer in the last two years. (not even kidding)

The vet came out yesterday, and the yard manager, who is also a vet nurse was holding my horse at the time, as I wasn't home. So she got to ask questions I wouldn't think to ask.

Basically, the vet believes my horse has Type 2 Equine Herpes Virus.

I want to cry, cheer, shout, scream, sigh with relief, laugh and all the other emotions.

Its been close to three years of the most random problems in my horse. So many things we put down to "old age" and cushings, and now it all makes sense.

The constant eye ulcers.
The sarcoid.
The head shakers.
The dermatitis in the elbow that just doesn't heal and results in full blown septicemia & staff infections.

Its all because of Type 2 Herpes.

He's probably carried the virus his entire life, but the cushings is smashing his immune system and the virus is just continually kicked his butt.

Does anyone else have a horse with this condition? How are you managing it? What are you doing to boost your horses immune system? My boy has been on Konke's Activ8 for months, and I can't say its not doing anything, because I don't know how much worse he would have been without it - but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do.

HELP!

I am so sorry your poor old lad is going through this - but it must be a relief to know why!

I'm afraid I have absolutely no experience or knowledge of EHV2 - but hopefully this will bump your message up :)

EHV2 is a gamma herpes virus that affects horses worldwide. When my wobblers horse was suspected with having EHV way back in 2004 I was told a third of all horses carry the virus. EHV is a contagious viral disease which can be spread via direct horse to horse contact (for example horses touching noses) and aerosol droplets over short distances (up to 5 metres) by coughing and snorting which can result in rapid spread through a group of horses.

Not all horses with EHV show the same signs, some may only show mild signs or if they are silently carrying the virus potentially no signs at all. A high temperature is often the first indicator that your horse is unwell.

Horses that are unwell or find themselves in a stressful situation will shed the virus.
