Is this compulsory? Friend is due her horses jabs soon and he was previously on a yard where they organised it, and when he had his flu/tet he had EHV as well - but I don't think my horses have it? Can't remember off the top of my head and passport is in lorry at yard!
Should she get it re-done or is it just the old yard being ultra-cautious/strict?

EHV-1 is given to broodmares and some youngstock present around breeding mares/studs. So the answer is no, it isn't compulsory, just advised in the above situations.

Great, will let her know she needn't bother. Wonder why old yard insisted it was done for all - don't think was a stud? Ah well, never mind, thanks for info and will pass on!

Some people these days give it to their horses if they compete a lot as there is more danger of passing/catching the disease if they meet a lot of different horses which you would do at a competition centre. It is worth bearing in mind that EHV vacinnation does not just stop mares from aborting foals but it has wider implications to the horse population as a whole. If a mare, gelding, stallion gets EHV depending on the type there is a tendency to ataxia which can result in recumbency which nearly always results in death. The figures are quite alarming and my vet said that 33% of the population of horses in this country are carriers although they don't all shed the virus.
