Basically you dont want EHV in your mares or foals! We vaccinate against it at 5,7 and 9 months. The vaccine does not stop them getting the virus altogether but can stop an abortion storm from happening if the mares take it.

Anyone any experience good or bad with EHV in foals or mares in foal?

There ARE no good experiences with EHV in in-foal mares. In mid-pregnancy, mares who get it inevitably abort. In late pregnancy, the will give birth prematurely to foals who are born ill and who are VERY likely to die.

Even a mild infection - showing no obvious symptoms in the mare - can result in abortion 2 to 12 weeks later (which is why you often don't hear about EHV abortions - if the foetus is not PM'd, the owner may be unaware of the cause.

Wondering if I should have my mare done. She's coming up to her fifth month. In what instances should I consider having it done? Isn't it required by some studs when you want to foal a mare down with them?

Circumstances - if she's pregnant!

I never USED to - then I had two horses who'd never been out, hadn't had contact with outside horses (or each other) come down with 'a virus'. Just after that a friend had a mare foaled prematurely (foal died very shortly after birth) and it was determined to have been caused by EHV. The cost is trivial considering the total cost of getting a mare in foal - NOT vaccinating is a false economy.
