Equine infectious anaemia (EIA) has been detected in a horse in Northumberland following importation from the Netherlands, Defra confirmed today.

Dont really get why they cant test the horses BEFORE they enter the country?

Wow, that's a bit to close for comfort! Agree with you R2R, I'm not quite sure why they can't test them before either?

Seeing as it is transmitted by flies etc surely it would make sense not to let them into the country?

You dont always get a true result. A positive horse can show negative if its not peaking when the blood was taken (as happens in cases of piroplasmosis). Many horses are healthy carriers and show no signs whatsoever but are highly infectious.
