Hi

My horse has developed a small area on the front of her pastern which is scabby, sticky, like mud fever.. she is susceptible to mud fever but since moving yards 4 years ago she has never suffered with it.

She wears hoofboots (easyboot gloves) for competition and had done over 250 miles in them with no rubbing but I have used a different boot last week (Grip) which has a slightly different gaiter, it cause a tiny ( and i mean tiny) little rub but then i used her gloves for a 20 mile comp, the next day this scabby area has come up.

Now I'm thinking the small rub was aggravated and got some mud/dirt in there and is now mudfever....

just surprised me as i've been using hoofboots for over 3 years and not had MF for over 3 years!

Thanks for your thoughts :)

It sounds like the rub has allowed some bugs in and they have developed into mud fever, it will be from a different soil than she is used to so less able to fight it, I have often found that a new horse will suffer from it the first year then gain resistance and never get it again unless like yours they get injured away from home. Last winter the only horse here that had any was new to the yard.

Treat it as mud fever, as you have found it early you will have more chance of clearing it up before it really takes hold.
