Good? Bad?

I want a leather girth for my horse because they are smart and I can clean it everday with my saddle rather than having to take it home to wash... I've been looking at the elasticated ones but I was advised by the saddle fitter not to get one with elastic on only one end. She didn't say why though.

Trouble is there seem to be hardly any girths elasticated at *both* ends out there (especially not on Ebay). Also the ones with the elastic on only one end are much much cheaper... So what are the pros and cons of the the different types?

I want a padded one for preference so any recomendations greatfully received.
thanks in advance!

Ive got an elasticated both ends as its just nicer! Means can have level pressure.

I had one made, but Treadstone do a really nice one, as do Frank Baines, but they are expensive! Think derbyhouse do a nice one for very good price and nice leather...

Jeffries do one with no elastic at all which I have been eyeing up. I really want a leather girth but would rather save than buy crap.

You can get them, it's just a case of finding them

And we always put the elastic on the right side at the yard so that clients couldn't over tighten the girth (as most people do girth up on left hand side)

Saddlers hate one sided elasticated as they make the saddles unbalance and put unecessary (sp) pressure on

You can get them in the UK but they are hard to find. I imported one from the States and it was much cheaper than having one made.

Try doing a search for Stateline Tack, they supplied mine and its excellent quality and very cost effective.

I've got a brand-new brown leather one with elastic both ends for sale. Bought it for new horse and the dopey previous owner told me the wrong size - doh!"! It's a 44 inch - any good to you? (Too small, I suspect, which was my problem!)

Why not try a shires cord girth? They look quite smart and seem to only need a dunk in warm water to clean.
Not a big fan of elasticated as never liked them.

Several saddlers have also advised me against using ones elasticated at both end - very easy to overtighten and are like an elastic band round the horses stomach, jumping esp. is advised against as the elastic can "snap" back into place.
Personally I use them and have never had any problems but then I dont jump <g>

I use elasticated both ends for jumping - I don't think the "rubber band" bit is an issue due to that fact that the whole girth is not elastic, however i can see one without restricts the movement in the action of a basule.

The SCI girth is fully elastic and this is the one that uni bods accross Australia worked on (has a system to prevent overtightening). I did notice one on a horse in the H&H riding school feature for blokes... obviously rubbish as no riding school I know of pays £80+ for a girth

Lol! I want one of those, they are BRILLIANT! My boy was broken with one, and ideally would have liked to carry on with it.... but finances do not allow at the moment! And surely they would be most likely to be "rubber bandy", and they're not, they just expand with the horse.....

Thanks everyone... I think I'll persever and keep looking. I know they sell them in my local saddlery but they are EXPENSIVE lol. And she's just had a whole new winter wardrobe so is about up to quota on prezzies at the moment!

Well if you want a bargain one PM me!

I think we are thinking about clearing ours as we need the space for a load of bits! (Very good quality, but not ideal for a mail order business as they are quite heavy to post)
