Hi

As above!!

I dislocated my elbow just before xmas it comes out of plaster tomorrow and then I have lots of physio to attend. I need to get on the horses early for various reasons o has any one got any suggestions of a good elbow support/brace to help whilst Im a bit weak and fragile?

thanks in advance

Trust me, it's highly unlikely that you will be able to get back on your horse early no matter what support you're wearing. You will need to pay particular attention to any exercises you are given, dislocated elbows are notorious for locking up and not returning to a full range of movement. The casualty doctor remarked that I would have been better off breaking it as ligaments take so much longer to heal.

Mine was never in plaster but felt most peculiar to the point of making me fell sick, wrapped it up with some vetwrap and it was much improved. It will be weeks before you can do much, it was two months before I could change gear in the car with it and another month before I could ride (bearing in mind that I ride one handed anyway), even then I had to have someone put my saddle on for me. I used a sports elbow support from the chemist for quite a while afterwards, starting off with the beefiest one I could find and gradually progressing to more lightweight ones until I felt that I could "go naked" :)

Be patient, it's so worth it.

I second Rhandir I'm afraid, I dislocated my elbow years ago as a teenager and was determined not to miss a show and rode after three weeks. It didn't seem to bother me much at the time but now a lot of years later I think I may have arthritis in it as it is so painful and can't straighten my arm fully. I wish I'd been more patient at the time.

I agree its going to take time and luckily my sister is a physio and I have 3 sessions in a gym a week with her anyway. Ideally Id be out the saddle until Im fit and able but Ive go to sit on a couple of horses end of Jan for work reasons. Sister is happy(ish) with me doing this if I hit the gym every day until I need to ride plus some good strapping but thought a support would also help.

I dislocated my elbow and chipped the bone about 2 years ago. I started riding pretty much straight away (once out of plaster) and found it fine. I have full range of movement now, but it did take a while.

Does ache when cold, but the other bones I have broken do too!
