24 year old connie has sore eyes. Vet has been out twice. One eye in particular flared up and under eyelids was sore and pink. We sedated her, had a good look for any foreign bodies and did the dye test for damage to cornea. Treated with antibiotics and then steroids. Redness has gone but both eyes still look uncomfortable. In the stable she rubs her eye on the door frame. I can't quite describe it but she looks like her eyes are sore even though no pinkness - eyes slightly less open or eyelids slightly drooping? She looks a bit miserable. She has had blocked tear ducts for years and I clean her eyes daily. She has melanoma under her tail and a growth in her sinus beneath her ear but on other side to worst eye.

Any suggestions for what to do to make eyes more comfortable or what it could be? I though about using human eye drops/ointment like Golden Eye ointment?

In the summer one of mine rubs his eyes if I don't get the fly mask on early enough in the spring. The his eyes get sore and watery. This is an allergy to the pollen. A weeks worth of hay fever tablets and he's usually OK again.

He you changed anything recently that coincides with her eyes getting sore? feeding hay, change in bedding, more time indoors.

My only other thought is that maybe there is another melanoma/growth in her sinus's which is preventing them clearing properly. But i'm sure your vet would of considered this when they came out.

Thanks very much for your thoughts. Nothing has changed really in her routine. She is prone to allergies so gets aubiose bedding when she comes in (mostly out except worst weather) and gets fed only haylege. Good idea about hayfever tablets - any advice on how many to give a 14 hh 450 kg pony?

make sure that your hygiene is very good. i used to use a piece of fresh piece of cotton wool daily damped with luke warm boiled water to clean my old mares eyes as she had a partly blocked sinus as well. i would ask your vet for some sort of eye ointment or drops as i dont think we should use human golden eye ointment.

I gave my 14.2hh welsh cob 3 a day, but check with your vet. Some people give a lot more. I use own brand ones (tesco/coop) as the ingredients are the same. But you do have to read the label as not all are exactly the same.
