Just wondered how many of us use electrolytes?
I aren't in the habit of using them - and suddenly it dawned upon me that perhaps I should be... H gets pretty sweaty and I guess it's only right that she gets her salts replaced...

always when we are competeing as obviously he will sweat more hence lose more minerals etc. also use them if he happens to sweat more than usual while training etc!

I use them everyday through the summer months and for competing / hunting etc the rest of the year. I put a little Salt in feeds everyday, all year, too.

Only if I think a horse needs them for any reason....and I make my own up from this recipe:

Electrolyte Mix
(Use a 28g little film canister)
2 parts sodium chloride (table salt)
2 parts Lite salt (potassium chloride and sodium chloride)
1 part limestone flour.

The feed i use contains salt.
However, if it didnt I would buy salt from tesco and add a teaspoon to their feed.

Why are you telling me?

Electrolytes are not synonymous with salt though...as potassium etc are required too.

Indeed. But have fed salt for years before as an electrolyte - i guess it was an old fashioned thing we did at the showing yard, and ive carried it on..

Only when he really, really needs them as IMO feeding them when unnecessary can do more harm than good. So usually only the day of a comp (at the end of eventing) and always in feed and never in water. Will then chuck any remaining feed.

If a horse has broken a proper sweat ie white and foamy due to any form of exertion I will give them afterwards but never before. I use a proprietory electrolyte for this.

Also feed salt daily to one of mine on the vets recommendation as part of the encouragement of his elderly digestive system. Salt and Low Salt mix.

My guys don't do enough work. They do have free access to a salt lick though.
At work they get salt everyday and electrolytes when they compete.

That's interesting BB's several feed companies that have visited my yard say that they catergorically do not add salt to a feed as it will draw moisture into it before feeding. ?????? So they insist you add the salt at feed times. Have you actually seen 'salt' on the bag. I would be interested to know.

Ive been told the same thing too Freshman in fact they would love to add salt as it would preserve the contents of the bag for much longer.

I wonder if the salt is actually an ingredient in the skimmed milk powder as that would need some form of preservative within it??

Possibly.
I read it as tho i wouldnt need to add anything daily. Hence why i no longer add salt to their feed.
Would be interesting to find out.
Both boys sweat really easily, and will get a liquid electrolyte when we've been competing/travelling.

As its nearly at the bottom of the ingredients list Id assume its a trace of salt rather than anything you could quantify. Does the label give percentages?
