I need to electric fence a paddock (roughly 1.5 acres) as we're renting extra land which will involve splitting off a section of field that his cows are in. Although I have mains electric in my own field, I can't take this to the other field as its opposite the house across a road... so battery will be the only way to go. I dont want to spend a fortune so looking for a cheap option to simply keep 1 line of tape along the top electric enough to keep the horse away from the current barbed wire fence and the cows from coming near it along one boundary. I'm unsure if cows need a really decent zap? I will be properly fencing (post and wire) along the boundary but I know cows can be pretty destructive!

I used to have a really good little energizer which hung from the fence and took normal D-cell batteries that I recharged every few weeks, I've found one similar but am not sure if "0.04 joules" is enough?? Would prefer not to have to get a big energizer and a battery as this is the best part of at least £300 (which is making my eyes water when I'm already having to buy a new gate and fencing).

Hi,
1.5 acres is about 300 meter ( ish ) so not too long.
Cattle do need a sensible zap and they are prone to retesting the fence so don't be tempted to leave the fence switched off.
If you don't want to use a 12v battery look at the 9v energisers they are convenient as you know roughly how long the battery will last. The down side is once they are flat you buy a new battery .
Equistop B1 0.12 J output £89.99 with a 3 month battery or £104.75 with a 9 month battery

hope this helps

Nick

We have some of the small hanging ones you mentioned that take 2 D cell batteries. They're great for small runs. We use a larger energiser and leisure battery now as we have electric tape around the whole boundary but, in the past, for shorter runs, the D cell ones were great. I think they're made by Shrike.

I did use one of these one season to separate a small paddock for my lami-prone pony from the main field with cows in and it seemed to be enough of a shock for them although they did once eat the earth connector wire and clip from the energiser!
