Just wondered if anyone can shed any light on this. I extended my electric fencing yesterday to allow my boy to graze next to his mates in a field they have been grazing in for about a week with no issues. All was well yesterday, they all grazed happily whilst we were finishing off, tensioning etc. The fence was not switched on at this time, well today none of the horses would go near the new bit which is full of grass even the ones that had previously grazed this field. The fence was off this morning until my boy went out when I switched it on but they would not move far from the gate and stood in the mud patch all day. Two of them were transfixed on something in the distance in the direction of new field. Its probably nothing to do with the fencing but I feel awful now as up until today these horses have galloped each morning to the new field, I put up the fence and now they wont go anywhere near the field.
I did coax them in at dinner time but aparantly they all ran out soon after.
Any ideas. Its a battery operated energiser and they are used to electric fencing.

Sounds like one of them got a bit of a belt off it, and now they all think it might bite them?! So better safe than sorry, they have all decided not to venture near it...

Or is it earthing somewhere, or making more noise than usual? Sometimes when I move mine a bit of it gets knotted and the electrical current makes more noise than before, so the sensitive ones are too terrified to go within half a mile of it.

Thanks for replying, they were all stood together near the gate which is electric too so I dont think its being near it thats worrying them. Ive not been very clear, sorry. Its a big field which is split with electric fence all the way down the middle, we have opened up a back field as there was nothing to eat but my horse didnt have access to it until yesterday when I fenced some for him. I wish I could suss it out as the other horses are YO's and I can see if it continues, the tape in the new field will have to come down leaving my horse with no grass.
I did notice part way down the tape was 'clicking' at a knot in the tape (I presume). Its just odd that even with the electric off they just arent happy.

As to why they are standing in that one place I can't answer but you shouldn't hear a fence clicking at all. It should run silently, your fence is shorting out.

As for clicking at a knot in the tape, best thing is to get rid of the knot & use a proper connector. Knots are a real weakness in a fence. You will find that if there is i.e. 6 strands in the tape. When you tie a know you will probably find that poossibly only 4 will actually make a contact. The next knot along you will find even less cointacts are made till eventually the fence is conducting nothing & then you are relying on a horse just staying away from the fence. Invest in a packet or connectors & your fence will run better.

Thanks for replying. Ive never noticed it click until today so I will try and sort that tomorrow. I was just worried I may have done something wrong that could be detremental to the horses in some way (fried horses

Hi flowerlady,
The fence was existing and already earthed, Ive just extended it using the proper end fence connectors. Ive tested it and it works great up to the knot (thats clicking)and works past that but not as strong. It is a long run now though but its not touching any wood or grass. I was just worried that I was the cause of the horses strange behaviour.

Well, today the horses still wouldnt go in the new field, it has to be the fence as up until me dividing it with the fencing yesterday they were really excited to get in there. Looks like its going to have to come down and my boy will be back without any grass.
