Electric fence question?

Hi, I was just wondering how many of you use electric fence? and wheather you have it plugged into the mains or you use a battery? If you use a battery how long does it last befpre you have to charge it? and when you charge it what do you charge it with and how long does it take before it's fully
charged?
Sorry for all the questions, but i have a chubby horse and a lot of grass and need it sectioned, so just wondering what you all did and what you can recommend to me.

Well the chubby paddocks at my yard all have electric fencing, all use a battery. Think battery lasts a week then usually charged (but not certain I could be way out!)
 
I love electric fencing, all my fences will be electric for a 30 horse livery yard. So because there will be so much it will all be on mains. I have had batteries in the past but you have the worry of it going dead and then charging it up. So i much prefer mains.

I used to use batteries and they would last for a week or so before needing to be charged. You need to buy a charger which plugs into the mains to re-charge - can be done overnight. I used to have two batteries to save having to leave the tape uncharged over night.

Oh, and choose your poles carefully - some are very flimsy and bend far too easily.

I use it to section my fields...on a car battery. I am careful that my fence doesn't touch anything to drain the battery (like thistles etc), and one car battery lasts about 2 to 3 weeks, then charges overnight (while the spare is on).
The ponies don't tend to notice for a brief period if it isn't on, anyway.
Works really well, but have two strands - one about pony chest height, the other about pony knee height (if you have a chest one only, some horses can learn to walk thru it without being zapped if they have a NZ on...whereas knees get shocked).

We have a solar one which is a year old and is fantastic as well as portable. Doesn't need recharging even in winter and saves a lot of hassle. One of the fencing companies like Electric Fencing Direct are good at advising and recommending the right bit of kit for the job. Hope that helps.
 
I have used battery operated fencing for years and it works really well, car bateeries tend to go flat fairly quickly . I use a leasure battery and i have had it on constantly for 8 weeks and its not flat, they have an indicator on the top to let you know when to charge and you can charge them off a car battery chargewr. I have 2 so I allways have it on when one battery is charged coz my clever neddies know that when the energizer isnt ticking they can just knock it down

I use a battery and charge it about once a month. You can buy solar panels which you can fit which means they need charging less, but you can just charge batteries off your car which is much easier.
 
We use a car battery, lasts about 2 weeks. Swear horses check when light stops flashing and start leaning on it so have to charge it up fairly regularly!
 
i used to use a car battery but now wont have the stuff near my horses as lost my foal to electric fencing gettin caught round her leg. in the past though i used to watch my section a wriggle underneath it so is always best with ponies to have really low like ankle height then knee height then chest height! stops the little buggers wriggling under!!
