Not knowing a lot about electric fencing, I wondered......

Do you need a pulsar? If so, why? Can you not put croc clips onto a battery and then the tape/ or (and the image made me laugh) would it make the whole field live, and have dancing horses?

You would short out the battery. Depending on the power of the battery this will

a) Damage the battery beyond repair
b) Cause the battery to explode
c) Set light to the field as the wire in the tape heats up to red / white hot then melts and falls to ground.

Non of the above recommended

ah - i wasnt told all that when I bought some electric fencing (i did buy an energiser). I was told that yes you could just attach the tape to your battery but it would drain the battery really fast as you would have a permanent current rather than a pulse, but you would have to make an extra wire to enable to attach to an earthing rod.

The energiser does a lot more than create a pulse. It increases the voltage from 12v to something around 3000v (depending on length of fence) but with virtually no amperage. Hence it creates a shock but without any physical damage.

Just connecting a 12v battery would not have any effect as an electric fence as the horse would not get a shock off it. Just try holding both terminals of a 12v battery in your hands. You wont feel a thing
