Im stuck with what is a good energizer to use...12v or 9v....
what make/model etc...
I pulled my old energizer out of the tack room tonight...mice have chewed through the wires and its over 20 yrs old so I think a new one is on my list of things to buy...!!
My old pony is an ace at getting through fencing, charging through it or even trying to jump it so an energizer which would put a bit of power in the fence would be great...
I have a car battery all ready to go just confused about the energizer language!!

seriously if has been looked after, it would be well worth putting new leads on at about £5, checking the battery connections too, make sure you have a very good earth, ideally a steel pole approx 1 meter in the ground and see if it works.
I did this for a friend and it saved us a fortune, and another tip to prolong the life of your fencer, is to protect it from the elements by putting a bucket over the top.

thanks for the details - do you know where I can get new leads from- mine hasnt really been looked after that well but I was going to see if there were some leads I could replace the unit with first and see if that works....do you know if scats can do that for me or would I have to get the leads, take it away, test it and then see...?
I have one of the dog spring things that dig into the ground...do you think that would be enough to energizes it?
Prob I have is ive left it all last min and need the fence to be up and running tomorrow evening :0(

can make leads from jump leads from a car shop - I'd give it a go. I have just bought a new energiser this weekend & found out that you can't use a car battery as it doesn't like being drained & recharged. Energiser & 12v leisure battery has cost a small fortune. Unfortunately my Rutland 6v energiser had died after about 12 years. Had been v reliable tho.

I have a Fenceman CP500 (a 12v) enegiser. Works really well, depite being a good couple of years old and not really been looked after

I run it off a car battery. Not sure it you're meant to , but it works perfectly well and the shock it gives is vaguly painful but not horrific. So much cheaper than other types of batteries. One car battery will last a whole summer if I make sure it doesn't drain out down grass/weeds/fances etc.

You'll need to get some proper advice about what wire to replace the chewed ones with as if you use the wrong stuff you could cause damage. I think you'll find that 'jump leads' will be far too thick.
Many people use car batteries to power the 12v energisers & they will work but as has been said a car battery is not designed to be run to flat & then recharged numerous times. Ideally you need a leisure battery. There are available from caravan shops. You'll probably get one for around £35.
Remember to get a decent grounding stake, you need it to be driven about 3' into the ground so you get a good earth. To increase the earthing kep the ground damp around it.
