Hi,

Just wondering what type of battery does everyone use for their electric fencing? And where did you get them?

We've just moved to a private yard where we need to set up all our own fencing and can't believe the cost of it all! We've managed to get 2 12v energisers and now need to get the batteries. I always used to use a car battery but someone tells me I'm better off getiing a leisure battery or I'll be charging the thing every 5 minutes. Do you know if this is the case? Also, can I get any leisure battery i.e. are the caravan ones etc o.K?
Very confused and managed to get rather ripped off in our local tack shop with a 9v dry cell battery which I now realise won't work with a 12v energiser :( Won't be going there again.

Many thanks for any help.

i use a car battery and a tractor battery on my 2 fencer units, i have a little solar trickle charger (£20 approx) on the car battery and that seems to help keep the charge longer so i don't have to keep taking it home for a full recharge, tractor battery usually lasts for about a month. i did have a leisure battery but didn't find it any better than a car battery.

I got a couple of old car batteries from my local garage. They charged me a couple of pounds, recommended ones from a diesel as more power? Last about 2 weeks between charges (or you could add a solar charger.

Leisure ( caravan ) battery's are much better for electric fencing .
I would recommend eBay for buying electric fence supplies I bought turbo rope today at half the price of our local merchant.
I use the taller posts for temporary fencing they are five foot high four door six when in the ground much better for horses.
the costs of getting a yard going are eye watering just focus on how lovely it will all be when it's done.

Leisure batteries are more suitable and they hold the charge longer. Mine, from Halfords, on all the time, last a good month between charges. You'll need a battery charger as well and a spare battery because a battery run right down can take days to charge up again. Robinsons do a good package and sometimes it's worth getting the right stuff new - you get what you pay for these days!

I should have been clear it was new turbo rope from an eshop that was half the price of the rope from agricultural merchant, I never buy stuff like that second hand but you can get huge discounts on new stuff just got a portable unit including a tester and stand for £100 much cheaper again.

If you garage is helpful they will sell one otherwise its buy one from halfords! I also have a charger. Mind you the best one is one of my sons old fiesta and it lasts about 6 weeks and is about 4 years old!!

You will have to invest in the charger too! Once you have it all its well worth it. Good luck.

I have a solar energiser....I would never remember to charge the battery!! I think it was about £400 so not cheap, but it does a long stretch of fencing and gives a powerful shock!!

These are the best thing - small leisure batteries, you get two so you charge one and use one and swap over. They show you when they are charged and once fully charged they trickle charge so you dont overcharge (which reduces the batteries charge ability over time). have had mine 2-3 years already and it is so great as I am not lumping great lorry batteries up and down the field and the charge lasts as long. The charger is really small and neat too.

I use two car batteries that i got from the local scrap yard (made sure they tested them first!) cost me £10 each. Each one lasts approx 2 weeks and I always have one on the fence and another on charge/charged ready to swap over.

If you live anywhere near a marina, caravan park, lorry park, etc - I have found these places most helpful in providing me with not quite yet dead batteries ... A good charge and they seem to hold forever!

Thank you for all the replies - think I'll get a cheap one from the local garage and get a proper leisure battery next month. Lots of things to buy an trying to space it all out a bit.

Thanks to you all again:)
