I bought all my fencing of Farmcare UK through ebay - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Farmcare-UK. Very helpful as I didnt have a clue about what I needed and the chap helped me save me money by recommending different options.
I bought my first kit from farmcare too but asked for the longer poles. The shorter ones arent much use if you have bigger horses or need to keep them seperate, ok for strip grazing though. The ones we have now are even bigger, 4' 6 high.
Meant to say, pay more for your posts, it really does make a difference. Ive just got 20 from Ebay for £30, I think and they are just for sectioning part of the field off to rest it. I wouldnt fancy using them to seperate our devil horses though as they bend in the wind. They were advertised as better quality ones so I dread to think what the others are like. The YO's are really good quality and have lasted for years.
I phoned farmcare and they helped me no end, and didnt pressurise me to buy anything. Though I did get my tape, handles and posts from them as they've very cheap and deliver the next day!
You'll also need a car battery (or leisure battery) and an energiser.
i've had about 4 different types, wouldn't use anything other than Fieldguard now, it's expensive but really well designed and totally worth the money.
If you are setting the fencing up as virtually permanent then use wooden posts with unsulators as they will stand up to the weather & wind better & won't bow in storms. Additionally I use electric rope in windy conditions as it doesn't get so blown about as the tape.
To ensure it works well use proper connectors for any joins in your tape or rope, don't just knot it as the connection won't be good. For the extra few pence it's worth it.
I got all my stuff from either Paddock Perfection or Farmcare on Ebay, both equally as good.
Once set up if you hear it 'ticking' then you have a short somewhere & it is arking as it should be silent
I bought from farmcare and they have been in constant use for 2/3 years and lasted really well.I would advise the longer 4 6 poles they have more uses.
Our horses have electric at home but we have wooden posts with screw in insulators and a combination of plain wire, rope and tape. If the electric fails when you also have wire/rope you still have a static fence to keep horses from escaping.
We also use the plastic posts and tape for strip grazing the small ponies to prevent them from getting too fat!
Tape gates are a good idea and very easy to make up yourself. Don't buy the metail spring gates, it's very easy for horses tails to get caught in them. We also had a foal who got under one of these and then got stuck!
We have a mains energiser but have also used battery ones as well. An old 12v car battery (heavy duty diesel is best) will be fine to run you fence as long as it's fully charged, don't go and buy a new one, it will just cost you a fortune!
And the best thing you can buy is a fence tester, much better than sticking your hand on it!
