....before they sussed it out?

I have just moved three horses into a fresh paddock, do they want the grass in it? Oh no, in their opinion it is greener on the other side and I have spent the morning watching them sticking their heads through to get to it.
Finally, when heads were on the inside of the fence I turned the power on (5 strands of cattle fencing wired to the mains) and all three got shocks, then two of them tried again, and again! (Chestnut mares) At the moment the girls are standing by the fence just looking at it and debating their chances. They know the fence is hot, they've been in that paddock before so why do they do it

(btw, there is a round bale in there for them too, so they aren't hungry)

Chex doesn't go within 6 feet of a fence so he's never got shocked lol. My friends shetland constantly climbs through the fence. She get seriously zapped, but I think the grass on the other side os worth it! If they're not doing for food, then its a little weird!!

Errrr one! Lol. And they won't go near it now. It is on the mains though so more powerful.

Can't believe your lot though, very odd really

they sound like our sheep- always always always better to be on the other side, lol.

Had electric tape and the shetlands would just walk through it. So we now have wire and it on the mains and that has stopped them. Also wire on a battery in the other field did the trick

Chex, I have my own thoughts on that.

.......one of them (mine) is really not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The other is a bossy animal and can't believe that there is a fence/horse/person that she can't walk through! She is a boarder and nothing but trouble, I'd love to get rid of her but can't right now. There's more grass in that paddock than there is anywhere else too.

My mum has a Dales mare and we figured out very quick that it doesn't bother her - she walks straight through it! She will even graze with it resting on her chest! Although you try and ride her close to electric fencing and she will freak out..... very strange mare!!

We used to have a horse on the yard like yours, allthough he woud literally barge at a metal gate to get out or any type of fencing he would escape almost every day! he would even touch it with his teeth and not be moved!

otto wont go near it ,especially if he can hear it clicking! we had to move his water bucket to the middle of the field as it was far to close to the fence for his liking, if the lecky is on when you turn him out he wont go anywhere near the gate.
meg is also very cautious , but only because ash zapped her by accident once!

Mine had to be zapped a few times before they realised tape was a no no. But recently the electric fencing has been down as in volt wise so they've had to respect for it. But it's not back up and running, anad they've come millimetres from it ut never got zapped
>.< We leave the eletric fence running all the time and just change the battery after about 4 weeks. Post and tape (the proper stuff) is about the only thing stopping them from going down a steep side into the brook. I've already NEARLY had one horse die of hyperthermia so I'm not having another.

Just once! Mind you, it's mains operated and guaranteed kangaroo(?) proof! I'm still waiting to see if that claim is true but as we don't get many kangaroos on the loose here we are unlikely to prove it. It packs a hell of a punch, though- I thought my heart was going to stop when I touched it by mistake!! Clyde actually sniffs at it to see if it's on or not!

my boy wont touch fencing that is not on!I heard somewhere that you put a wet flanel on their chest and then make them touch it on the flanel to give them a big zap so they dont go near it again, sounds a bit mean though!

My horse once had a zap off fence connected to the mains. Swiftly followed by a loud stampede of hooves and clouds of dust!

He does not go near the fencing now. This one is not even electrified. It seems he learnt that lesson very quickly.

Mine always stays away from the fence, he must have been zapped at some point but I've never seen it.

If your horse can hear it clicking then there is something wrong with your fence. The clicking is a bad connection or it is shorting somewhere. There may be a slight sound from the energiser but the wire should be silent.

My mare has no respect for electric fencing what so ever!!!! now have 3 strands of tape and a tractor battery to zap her and she still goes through. She just throws the fence up with her nose and runs under. Have tightened the fence as much as poss but still can squidge under, must get a massive shock but the grass on the other side must be well worth it. Shes driving me mad now!!!
The shetland and foal soon worked out that its not to be touched and dont even need to run electric through it to keep them where they are meant to be

I don't use a flannel, I just wet their noses and lead them up to it

My fence is mains powered though and they only touch it the once, foals included... they are very fast learners... fence = pain!

None of mine respect electric fencing at all. 2 of the natives just stick their heads through, their manes are so thick I guess they cant feel it? They make sure to keep their manes pushed up against it (rather than the underneath of their neck!). Another jumps it...... And another somehow gets over it but manages to pull it all down so everyone else can escape........ In the end we got proper wire fencing up (with electric top line) and nobody touches it!
