I would be most grateful for some advice.

I recently had two of my fields re-fenced with Wooden Post Fencing with Equi-Fencing on it (a type of tight knit metal sheep fencing).

Unfortunately the horses are rubbing their rear ends against the fencing (sweet itch) and are also leaning over the fencing and have broken some of the wooden fence posts and loosened some of the others.

So as to prevent further damage I am considering fixing electric fencing to the top of the permanent fencing.

Am, I better off with tape or rope?

Should it be off-set i.e on long stalks or fixed close to the fence posts?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

I would use 18" off sets with rope, stops them getting their behinds under the rope and still being able to scratch😊

Could you screw round insulators to the posts and run a length of electric rope parallel to the top rail on the inside, or at bum height if thats a bit lower? I have had electric fence on the inside of post and rail before, the post and rail needed replacing really and for safety I wanted to keep the pony from leaning too hard on it!

I went with offset insulators and electric rope for protecting the somewhat ageing post and rail fencing. Put them so they stuck out towards the horses, to stop the sweetitch one from being able to scratch her backside and stop the pair of them from being able to get close enough to lean over them.

I used the ones that look like this:

I would definitely get stand off insulators if they really want to itch, we have a line of wire ontop but it really is just to discourage rail chewing.
I'm not sure you need tape or rope particularly as you won't be using it as the visible fence line just to keep them a bit further back of yours. If you do opt for one of those to be more visible it depends a bit on your wind condtions etc, I'd probably err towards rope.
