Okay, I'm going to ask the field owner if i can possibly strip graze little man.
I can get car batteries, and have a charger, but obv. need the taping and posts.

Can anyone recommend where I can get these cheap? and how many posts i'd need? What else, apart from a handle, would i need? And has anyone used the solar panel battery chargers? I was thinking it would save me charging a bettery every night! Any recommendations??

Does anyone use green taping and posts? I'm just thinking, as his field is in the middle of quite a nice area of houses, and right in front of YO's house, white tape doesnt exactly look nice does it??

I know the idea of white means the horses can see it better but has anyone actually had any probs with green?

I think white thick strand can look good as long as its not twisted and knotted, I've had the horses on a yard with green tape and there were no problems though. Have a look on ebay maybe... I think thats my answer to everything at the mo

I got posts very reasonably from an Ebay shop called Paddock Perfection. Some people say the green tape makes no difference in terms of visibility for horses, although it does seem to usually be more expensive than the white.

I use rope rather than tape - the tape seems to flap and snap in the wind quite often

. I have posts about every 15m, the small polyposts (£2 each from tackshop, thats quite pricey I think - seen them cheaper on ebay), and use wooden posts for the corners and every 100ms or so. I don't actually have mine turned on though, Chex doesn't go near enough to it to discover its not electric!

Scatts was the cheapest I found. I've used both white and green tape on green posts, found it all worked the same, didn't have any issue with the horses seeing it etc... I have my post about 10ft apart, so depends how big an area you are going to give him. Only other thing you need is an energiser (the thing that connect the battery to the tape. I have one that runs of a leisure/car battery and it runs for about 2 weeks before I need to recharge the battery. Don't forget an earthing stake. It might be cheaper to buy a starter pack then all the bit individually.

When you say charger do you mean energiser? cos you'll need one of those. Robinsons do a starter pack for around £100 with all you need in. I usually space my posts approx 5/6 metres apart(or large steps), but you may want to have them closer together for a shettie as they can easily roll the wire over their back given half a chance.
If you have sheep in the field you may struggle with having a shettie because you'll need the tape/wire low to keep him in but high enough for sheep to get under without pulling it down. I use wire and green posts as it looks nicest..I hate white tape. You'll need to tension it too at each end.
A fully charged battery lasts me weeks/months. You won't need to charge it every day.

Oh!

I thought you just attatched one end of the tape circuit to the possie o the battery and the other end of the circuit to the negative......

Nope need energiser to pulse the current down the fencing, that the most expensive bit of electric fencing, think they start at about £70 (that without battery or solar panel

There are 2 really good suppliers of all the stuff you'd ever need for electric fencing on Ebay, they are Paddock Perfection & Farmcare. Ive used both of them several times & their delivery is good also.

I use the rope with the 6 strands of wire in them. The rope looks alot tidier than the tape, which tends to flap around in the wind. I used wooden posts with insulators instead of plastic ones which tend to bend & look untidy......the wooden ones are generally cheaper than plastic any way.

Work out how much fencing you want to power & then you can sort out the power of energiser you need.....finally if you can get hold of a leisure battery & use that it is much better than a car battery. Car batteries are not designed to be run right down & then recharged...it damages them....leisure batteries are designed to be run right down without causing damage.

You get wooden posts from wood yards, saw mills etc. Go for fence stakes, they're cheaper, may have a bity of bark stiull on them but they've been tanalised so won't rot for years. If your Dad's a farmer he'll know where to get them.
