Has anyone else had this problem?
We have recently been fortunate enough to purchase a field and build our own stables, all the services are now sorted except for the electric, who are proving themselves to be typically difficult.
Because the land is a green site the electric has to be run from a transformer on the road, the initial quote was for £15,000 (gulp) we have managed to get this down to £5000 (phew) however they have inserted two very scary clauses 1) they can increase the price as they see fit, almost carte blanche (what exactly is the point of a quote then) and 2) if their engineer does something which causes the electric board a problem at a later date (this could be in 20 years time) them we would be held responsible and have to pay any costs incurred. Apparently, having shown this to our solicitor, this is legal (if not moral). We have looked at alternatives like solar and generators, but none of them will quite do the job we need - sooo does anyone know of a way round this, or of an insurance policy that would cover is for clause 2 or really any idea at all? (sorry its longwinded but.....)

How far does the new cable have to run, and will a transformer be required at your end?I have installed supplies in similar situations, and done the ground work (digging) for the electricity board. They merely had to connect the ends of the cable and inspect the depth of the trench, and afte I had backfilled to the depth of the marker tape.Much cheaper and quicker than them using their own contractors. Dont worry too much about item 2. When an engineer calculates for a new supply,he has to consider the spare availablecapacity on the system. He uses a diversity factor. Put simply, it is highly unlikely that all the consumers will use power to their systems maximum capacity at the same time.So more people can be connected to a transformer than the total of their individual supplys capacity would suggest. If they connect you and you start using huge amounts of power and black out the neighbourhood, they will expect you to pay to upgrade the system.Thats all.
