never bought but went to see one, horse wasnt the one for me, but yard was very busy, good facilities, clean i found Gavin nice enough, typical dealer nothing really wrong with them.
Although I know a lot of horse people gripe about passports, this has in my opinion been the one factor that has really cleaned up the industry.
When buying through a dealer, check the type he specialises in and the general price range, then use the ones that meet your needs. Most do specialise. Get as much info beforehand, such as sire & dam of horse you are interested in and get video, especially if horse is far away. Pointless otherwise.
So if Elite Irish Horses has the type you like in your price range, then have a look at what they are advertising.
Go see horse, take friend and take a video camera. Do not be forced to make a decision on the spot. No matter how taken you are with the horse and no matter what kind of pressure the dealer puts on you, go away and think about it and discuss with friend. Post your video on You tube and share with trusted horse advisors. I am currently in discussion with a dealer who is now saying "oh, I think I will keep it". Fine. Keep it. I will find another elsewhere.
Look at passport. Stand next to horse and be sure that it is the same horse as passport describes.
If you decide to buy, get vetted and do not fall in love with horse before this- they can fail vetting and then you need to walk away.
Do not buy an unvetted horse.
If horse does not work out, a dealer has to replace/refund money and reputable ones, and there are plenty of these, will do so, no problem. Let him/her know PDQ if there is an issue.
A dealer really needs to preserve his reputation and this is great pressure on him to be straight with you. He/she cannot afford to get a bad rep.
Good luck!
Seems lot's been going on with these dealers...Gavin appears to have struck out on his own..he had ad in horse and hound under different name..and other's now different phone numbers and new jockeys in photo's
haveing said that we brought pony last year and could'nt be happier with it..and would go back to gavin without a problem..he seems to have stayed based in his yard near boomerangs
