Just been watching the show jumping from Munich on clipmyhorse.de ... Yesterday she had a refusal due to CS Online napping. Lots of others had the same and handled it very well, Ellen W just went straight for the whip and was using spurs but hauling him back in the mouth at the same time

Then just now, they had a fence down in the 2 phase, just one of those things horse didnt do anything wrong, She proceeds to whip it over the next jump, and then have another spur-digging mouth-hauling temper tantrum on landing. It's the little spur digs after they've finished the course that really annoy me, along with this see-sawing on the horses mouth that i always see

There's competitive and there's competitive

Just my opinion of course.. has anyone else been watching and feels i have over exaggerated?

Ah thats annoying.

I wonder what the rest of her family must think.

I havent watched it, but have seen and met ellen on a number of occassions and feel you couldnt have gotten her more wrong if you tried, just because you cant see the horse misbehaving doesnt mean its not. feeling is everything and when buzz napps he gets a bloody good hiding. some pepole just cant handle seeing a horse being delt with in the most effective mannor, not that i condone cruilty but i also belive if its not your horse its not your buisness.

Interesting, but as you say you haven't seen it so i guess its hard to comment on whether the horse was being naughty or not? I think it was the contrast to the way other riders dealt with napping/having a pole down and the way she did which made it seem worse than it was, perhaps..

I do agree with you in some senses, but we have to remember that many of these competitions are being viewed by the public - of which a large percentage do not fully grasp how much discipline may actually be necessary, and how much may not. Seeing display like that, I can believe that many people would think it perfectly acceptable.
I used to quite like the way Ellen rode, saw her ride (and win?) at HOYS years ago, did a bloody good round with no pulling/kicking etc. What happened? But her style does nothing for me now, there are much better riders out there.

Other thing to consider is, if a horse is making that much of a fuss, can it really be enjoying its job? Sorry, but if it needs that much 'discipline' then I would say it was unsuitable or unhappy.
But who am I to talk.....?

My old pony was used in the Riding School and for the BUCS University competitions and so there was no way in hell he was going to get away with being naughty-when he napped or refused for no good reason he did get a good whack. To be fair to her she's very slightly built and if a horse is not listening and hurtling towards a 1m50 jump or not listening then more pressure on the reins may be required.

wow, if everyone felt like that would any abused horse ever get to the ILPH etc? should we all just turn our cheek because we didn't pay for the horse?

A lot of horses would be living in truely awfull conditions if everyone thought that, the Amersham horses for a start....

I dont have a problem with a smack.
A smack for disipline is ONE smack after unwanted behaviour, rinse and repet if the behaviour is given again-a series of smacks is never OK.
I cant understand why anyone would consider smack after smack after smack to be the most effective way of dealing with a situation-I would call it loss of controll or temper tantrums.

i havent seen the video, but it doesnt surprise me, i saw her do exactly the same at the Hickstead Derby this year when her horse refused to come off the bank. there are much better riders out there, and i dont see why young girls look up to her as a role model if thats the way she rides

Aww, get a grip. Give the girl a break, she must be doing lots right to get where she has. If a horse is naughty it needs to be disciplined.

If no-one on here has never lost their temper with their horse you must all be a bunch of angels, or your horses are.

Where you on top riding with her? Have you ridden this horse? Jumped him round a 1.50m course? If not then I don't reckon how she rode him is down to your judgement- I'm not saying if you aren't at that level don't judge, but if you aren't at that level on that horse on that course on that day then don't judge.

she does this as a job-think of the money paid for stabling, transport and entry fees. Plus she's expected to maintain good results for the sake of her sponsors, owners etc.

All the other riders i watched have the same pressures too, and any of their horses napped at a particular jump and knocked poles down too - didn't cause them to behave how she did.

Like I said before - have you never lost your temper or got frustrated with your horse??

Just because another rider doesn't smack their horse in the ring doesn't mean you know what they do with it out of the ring ... food for thought.

If a rider digs a horse with spurs and yanks it in the mouth after having finished their round, that in my mind, is not disciplining the horse but the rider feeling pissed off and annoyed.

Firstly, I have not seen the footage so probably shouldn't comment. However, Just out of interest, how would you deal with napping? a little pat and a few words of wisdom.... yes right.... that will work...not! And as for the pole problem, I am guessing the horse was still not listening to the rider and probably still napping.

Why do we pick on Ellen so much? not saying she does not deserve criticisum but is it that:-
1)we think she has it easy
2)she is pretty and young
3)we are envious
4)she is a bad representative of the sport
5)our children may be swayed by her "little out bursts"
6)the Whittaker name

Because it's being naughty? God good no! LOL!
But I do know when I am going to lose my temper.
At that point a smack to correct behaviour will turn into hitting to relive your own frustration, and I would be off before then.
Hitting for no reason other then you are pi55ed off does not do anyone any good.

I like her as much as you can like any rider/sportsman yo have not met,but she does need to get the childish strops under controll.
