I hate it when my horsey gets hurt - even worse when I'm there to see it happen

She's out with four other mares and they all seem to co-exist quite happily - she is best buds with YO's big mare

OH and I went to check her last night and gave her a small treat; he fed her whilst I kept hold of the 'Boss' mare, who is very bargy and whose owner doesnt like her to receive treats in the field as she gets nippy.

Ellie walked away from us to go and have a back scratch with her mate

I let go of the other mare and gave her a pat, but she then proceeded to run backwards (she was about 20 metres away from Ellie) and double barrelled poor Elz in the stifle/flank

Thankfully Ellie seems ok - she carried on scratching her buddy's back

But it was just horrible to see! The mare did it to one of the other horses a few weeks ago, in the same place - I think she targets the stifle area

Normally she is ok with Elz - I havent seen her go for her before - but I think last night it was out of complete spite because she wasnt the one being petted

Just a mini rant really - there's nothing I or anyone else can do about it

unfortualy horses will be horses theres not much you can do about it part from seperate them if you do not want her kicked

You fed Ellie in the field with another horse around that wasn't being fed? Could this not have caused some resentment?

Only P has a feed in the afternoon of mine, as she has supplements, but I always remove her from the field to feed her. I wouldn't dream of giving her a feed when the others were in the field.

Hope she's ok. (((Hugs)))

I didnt feed her as such - I gave her a Polo

She doesnt have proper feed when turned out - Lord knows, she doesnt need it!

I agree - if she were being fed it would be madness to do it in the field - it just wouldnt happen. A couple of the other mares still have dinner and they are always taken out of the field for it. But for a simple Polo, I cant see the problem really? This is the first (and hopefully last!) time there have been any issues!
