in the hope that there might be someone out there who lives locally-ish :D I have the chance to do an 80cm eventer challenge at Broadway (which has always struck me as a nice 80cm, if hilly) OR a ODE at Elmwood (never been there) - any thoughts please?

Hi,

Elmwood is in theory kinder (though unaff so they can chuck whatever they want in really!).

I love Broadway, it was my first ever event though I managed to get us eliminated by missing a fence which was a shame as he would have placed. I'd say its on the tougher end of the 80's I did though... not for combinations just some fairly spooky fences. A blue haycart in particular gave me nightmares on the course photos before the actual event!

But yes Broadway hilly Elmwood flat.

Good luck :D

Great thanks Michen :) just out of interest, what other 80s did you do? I understand completely about the blue haycart at Broadway (we don’t ‘do’ haycarts yet apparently...!!) but I like it as a venue very much :)

Ummm I did Broadway, Calmsden, Snowball (eventer challenge), Ascott under Wychwood... I'm sure there was another before stepping up to 90 but can't think now- feels like a lifetime ago!

Ooo yes Ascott u Wychwood is another on my list - thanks that’s really helpful :)

Love Ascott. All the Cotswoldy ones are amazing really... So much nicer than the Aston le walls/Munsteads/Bovington types where you just feel like your cantering through schooling fields.

I think it's nice to feel like you are really GOING XC lol! And I love a good view ;)

You'll have a blast- I wish I had the confidence to still do it!

I’ve not been to Broadway but I did Elmwood 70 last year and have schooled there. The fences are well-built and not too spooky, there’s a caterpillar and a double of carrots in the 80 last year but other than that mostly good solid wooden stuff. It’s completely flat there. Dressage was on the other side of the road to the jumping so not too many distractions! They’re lovely helpful people too.

Thanks J1ffy - I’ve withdrawn from Calmsden :( as I don’t think we’ve had enough practice so this might be our first 80 of the year!

Have you thought about Ascott UNder Wychwood the following week- gives you an extra weeks prep and although it’s hilly it’s more forgiving than Calmsden, not as many sharp vertical(!!) hills!
