Emergency spay for Pyometra

Im posting this in most of the forums I go on as an awareness really.

Amber had an open-pyometra and is has just had an emergency spay

This morning she was rushed into the vets with blood coming out of her 'bits', badly. She had an open pyometra. She required an emergency spay and is staying in overnight. The op went as well as it could, but her womb was full of pus (sorry if TMI), so they removed everything. They are keeping her in on fluids to make sure the infection hasnt got to her kidneys.

I feel so bad that I didnt add up any of the signs, but looking back a lot of it makes sense now. Cant wait to see her tommorow, the last time I saw her she had just been violated by the vet and was looking really sorry for herself...

I had heard about pyometra but didint realise the severity of it until now.

Eak...(((((hugs))))) for Amber.....its a common and serious condition...esp as it was open(she has been lucky)...and the signs can be really hard to look out for given the time frame.
This is why all my bitches are and will always be neutered.
Hope she makes a speedy recovery.
 
Oh no - that sounds awful. Fingers crossed and vibes for a quick recovery. In the interests of education, what are the symptoms (so we can all keep a lookout).

Symptoms that Keisha had were a normal season, then about a week after season finished she appeared a bit down, slightly off her food, and drinking loads of water. She had a brown, dirty looking discharge, and bearing in mind all discharge had cleared up the previous week we rushed her to the vet. She too had open pyometra, emergancy spay and came out of it 100% fine, in fact only when she came home next day and she was back to her normal self did we realise how sick she had been.. Main symptoms for us were huge amount of drinking (thus peeing) and the discharge...
 
Glad she's ok. Mine had the same but had pus rather than blood coming out and I felt equally as bad as she'd been off colour for a few days before I took her to the vets. So you are not the only one! At least the vets found it in time. Hope that helps!
 
Poor Amber, hope she is soon on the mend. Don't feel too bad about not spotting the symptoms. I think you have said in previous posts that you are new to dog owning (forgive me if I am wrong), and you can't learn everything straight way. Particularly as you have had a lot of other problems with your two

One of my bitches had a closed pyometra. She was not typical as she had had 2 litters. I was lucky that my vet didn't dismiss me as a neurotic owner when I took her in with no obvious symptoms but just not right. A scan showed an enlarged uterus and when she was operated on it was on the point of bursting so she, and I, was very lucky.

Your post is a good warning to folks to speak to their vets if they are not happy with an animal, even if you can't "put your finger on it".
