My 13+yo JRT has just undergone emergency surgery to remove her spleen. The vet can't say if the mass on her spleen is malignant but if so it does not appear to have spread.
She has come through the anesthetic well, but will have to stay at the vets for another while yet to ensure pain is under control etc.
I'm just wondering if any of you have been through similar and have any advice please?

Not with the removal of the spleen I'm afraid. My rottie had an emergency op last year and coped really well.
Fingers crossed the vets have your little one sorted

Thanks Digger123, it's great that your Rottie coped so well. I think this vet is good but it is not my usual vet practice as it was Sunday night and this was the one on call.
it's so worrying, my girl has up to now been very well and active. I'm really hoping her life will get back to normal.

Yes, but it probably is not what you want to hear.
Our problem was that the bitch was carrying too much weight and we were not aware of the size of the tumour until it was very big, it also meant she probably needed much more anaesthetic and the surgery was harder on her, so I would appeal to all owners anywhere not to let their dogs go to seed, even if they are a bit older.
If she's fit, active and trim then she has a much better chance of pulling through.
I hesitated in writing this down but I do want to be honest, and I really hope your girlie bounces back, if she's come around well then things are on her side x

Matty dog, ridgey in my sig, had the same surgery only she was bleeding internally. She took a week or 2 to recover but did very well afterwards. She had to have regular scans to check it hadn't spread. It did return but not for a few years and again was successfully removed. Sadly not a happy ending as we lost her shortly after the 2nd surgery.
Keeping everything crossed for your girlie.

Thank you all for your support.
I have her home tonight. the vet didn't want to discharge her as her blood count is very low. (She was bleeding too Mattilda) she was allowed to come home because she really didn't want to be at the vets.
She is alert but quite breathless. I'm so worried but don't want on bring her back to the vet until tomorrow as she will fret.

We had a a rottie who had an emergency spleen removal.

She came through the op but was never the same after that, she died soon after :(.

I hope your JRT makes a good recovery.
