Just a quick question, my daughter is doing her work experience with friends of mine who run a small stud & a farm, they dont employ anyone so they havnt needed to bother with Employers Insurance before, but the college wont let my daughter go there without them getting it. So can anyone suggest anyone (apart from NFU) to try, ive been looking on the internet for them but i cant find anyone who seems to do insurance that is farm or horse related.
Shame the country is so "where there is blame there is a claim", i did my work experience on a farm years ago & never had this much hassle.

They should have public liability insurance in place, if so you can often get an extension to cover employees for a short period of time.
Work experience placements fall under the regulations and have to be treated as employees.

They have public liability with NFU, to add employers insurance onto it was very high, so thats why they are looking round for someone else.
I know they have to be treated as employees, hence all the hassle & the college wont allow her there without it, its just a pain when i look back at how easy it was when i did my work experience.

I had a friend's daughter do her school work experience on my private yard. As I don't employ anyone I didn't have employer's liability insurance. After some investigating I turned out I was was covered under my household insurance ( on the same basis that some-one coming into the house to do work eg. cleaners were covered). The yard is at home.

You could try pointing out to the College that the student is not being 'employed' - she's a guest gathering some work experience! Therefore, Public Liability SHOULD cover her.

Otherwise, talk to KBIS - they do Public and Employer Liability for yards - mine is with them as they were considerably cheaper than NFU and SEIB for the same cover!

We tried that & they were having none of it, it has to be employers insurance sadly. Ill look into KBIS, thankyou :)

My nephew who wanted to do work experience on a Farm had the same problem. Unfortunately, no insurance meant no work experience. So I would be interested to know if you find a solution to this issue
