Ive been thinking of employing somebody to help me on a part time basis, for 5/6 mornings a week, probably 7.30am-12ish. I would struggle to pay at the moment as my yard isnt full so was thinking about offering livery in exchange for work? Not sure if this is the best way or to just pay someone each week? Has anyone else done this? All Views most welcome! Thanks in advance

so, you want someone 4 1/2 hours a morning, 5/6 mornings a week... that's 27 hours a week. Going by minimum wage... you'd effectivley be charging 145 pounds a week for livery...

Think you'd be better off paying someone. I did work for livery as a student and only did weekends. You'd be looking for someone who isn't currently working too and asking them to commit to a quite spread out amount of time including over the 'school run' which cuts out mums with school age kids. Students need to attend lectures so you might struggle to get someone unless you pay minimum wage. What't that at min? £6 ish.. I pay my dog walker £15 an hour and my cleaner £8 (I have three dogs and she takes 'em all together) so at best you'd be paying £25 a day.

Let me know what you go for tho' as I'm thinking of getting an au pair/groom housekeeper to do my house, dogs and horses as the amount I pay is so much more than minimum wage but... the joys of working 50 hours a week and commuting another 10!

i get paid to work part time AND get free livery...think you may be asking too much of someone!
plus its hard finding a second job thats just afternoons, well im struggling anyway

Even if you give free livery in return for help on the yard, it is seen as employment in the eyes of the government and you will need Employers Liability at around £450/year, unless you risk it and hope nothing goes wrong

from an employees point of view - I have worked for livery and it was bloody horrible

Yards lovely, but found it very stressful as felt I was 'on duty' when it was supposed to be time off with my horse. The agreement only lasted a few months before I moved pony but continued to work there for cash. Its so much better now, and I can relax when I go see pony, as I should be able to.
Sorry, thats probably not helpful in any way, just thought Id give my twopence worth

Out of interest where are you based? This is exactly what I am looking for to work in return for livery! I am sure you would get a good interest.
