Hi Folks this my first post. We have a performance bred Connemara mare whom when we bought her last year was 'nice and round'. Over the winter she lost the roundness, still kept herself covered with a layer of fat but empty around the kidneys as I would call it. After a blood test, in Spring, she turned out to be slightly low in iron and had decreased white cells.(or incresed, whatever generally shows a viral infection). She was put on a vitamin/mineral supplement, has been wormed, vaccinated. She was and has been in good form when ridden, competing at RC and ODE. She looks more like a 'fit' Thoroughbred with bone than a Connemara. She looks empty below the loins, with a good depth of girth. I have tried most things, and the the pony with her, an Exmoor type is too fat, but gets fed the same, or most times, even less. Some people say I am too worried, but they don't realise that she is only ridden once a week. They think she is ridden daily, or horsewalker!!!

What are you feeding her on? try upping her fibre intake if she is looking run up. my lad was very tubular and i didn't want to feed him high conditioning mixes so went down the route of fibre and oil, after feeding him a high fibre mash with added oil he is looking fab, not fat but rounded and depth to his girth, i suspected he may have low grade ulcers as he is quite stressy so also fed him a ulcer guard supplement, hope this helps x

It could be lack of muscle rather than fat if she's only ridden once a week? Maybe try building her fitness up slowly, especially if she's competing.. and feed her a high fibre diet.. any pics so we can see what you mean exactly?

Hi Thanks for the replies. The pony is fed adlib haylage and a coolmix. The pony is ridden 3 -4 times a week for 1 hour and does pony club competitions. We have just has hjer back checked and the physio believes that the loss of condition may be due to siatica(sic). She out in the field for a week and I will get some pics of her and post.

Once again thanks

I would also get her some aloe vera juice in case the virus is still hanging around. It is a great pick me up too. I get it from holland and barratt, you need 2 large bottles and feed 200ml a day

In the past it is all I use for viruses and if a horse just seems low.

ps I never used to believe in things like AV but was at my wits end when horse had virus but would not eat the stuff the vet gave, he said to use the old remedy which was AV I did but could not believe the results :D
