So I rescued my boy earlier in the year and he was very big and hairy, we limited his grass, hay etc but it obviously wasn't enough. Since he’s lost his coat he has what looks like cellulite on his rump and fat pockets everywhere. He bloats at even the sight of grass and puts on weight eating fresh air.

Had the vet out and he has been put on tablets and confirmed EMS (but didn’t take a blood test?!). They are coming again today with a weigh bridge (couldn’t get the weigh tape to even meet 2 weeks ago). I’m going to insist on a blood test today just in case this is the start of something else too! I’ve got him on a very strict diet prescribed by the vet and everything is weighed, he has lost about 6 inches off his girth in 2 weeks.

I’m a bit nervous as to how far over weight he is but the vet thought last time about 200 – 300kg!!

Does anyone have any tips of how to deal with / cope with EMS?

hi, the best advise i can give you is restricted grazing for 5-6 hours a day max and soaked hay (soaked for min of 4 hrs) for night.

if you can try not to feed any hard feed but if you have to just use a balancer or fast fibre etc.

exercise is a MASSIVE factor - the more work you can do on him the better!
