EMW Sanctuary

I inferred from fb that it is possible that the mortgage hasn't been paid and the farm will be repossessed, but I guess someone else could have a claim. In any case half a million is a huge amount of money to raise at short notice so I hope behind the scenes they are looking to see if they can rent premises elsewhere or if other charities will step in for some of the horses / donkeys. They've done a lot to raise awareness of conditions at markets as well as taking in older / infirm equines over at least 2 decades that I can recall.

The GFM is a bit rambling. And it's in no way clear what the issue is, but hopefully a resolution can be found.

Yup, this. I have no idea whats going on. I know EMW and know they are a charity worth supporting, but based on that GFM they come across as weird and I cant imagine anyone who doesnt know them will donate, can it be changed?

It was clear on Fb they didn’t want to make the reason public but would in private if someone was talking serious money.

My reading between the lines was that someone else (family) has a claim on the house/land.
This is what I think. The trustee who lived at the farm died recently but her husband is still there. I'm wondering if her relatives inherited and want to sell.

I'm always wary of GFM's. They can be set up by anyone, and may not be genuine. Horrible scammers take advantage of people's unfortunate circumstances. If you want to donate, then donate through something that has been thoroughly checked.
I'm sorry to hear that the EMF Sanctuary is having difficulties. They do a great job.

Me too, but in this case it's been set up by someone who works/volunteers at the sanctuary so is definitely genuine.

A message from Sam.
Firstly I would like to say a huge, massive thank you to every single person who has donated, supported, shared our posts, followed us on all social media platforms, tried desperately to encourage support from media outlets and celebrities alike.
💕

We already knew our followers were special but you really have stepped up in a way we couldn’t have imagined during, what is, the worst possible time in this charities history.
Now, I would like to address the slightly negative, questioning comments we are receiving regarding the figure required on our Go Fund Me page, that being £500,000.
This sum is required to purchase, in full, the farm we (EMW Sanctuary) have been situated at for over 24 years.
Due to unforeseen circumstances the owner, Bryan, has sadly discovered there is a huge debt against the property that he was completely unaware of, and only discovered a short time ago.
The reality is that Bryan is in no financial position to repay the debt himself and this leaves him no other option than to sell the property to repay the debt.
If we (EMW) are able to raise £500,000 then Bryan will sign the whole farm over to the charity, therefore guaranteeing the charity and the equine residents a home for life and allow this charity to continue its vital work in the equine world.
We are fully aware that this is like asking for the moon, however we HAVE TO TRY.
As I’m sure most of you are aware our resident horses and ponies all have their own unique requirements and needs, if they didn’t they would have been offered for rehoming, one of these being EMW Conker who is totally blind, he knows his home like the back of his hoof, his best friend,EWM Willow, is effectively his guide horse and when Willow and Conker are parted Conker simply cannot cope. This is just one example of the reasons we are fighting, the reason we are trying everything we can, the reason we are having countless sleepless nights. The reason Elaine is making herself ill with worry and it’s breaking all of our hearts.
These horses need us and we need to save our sanctuary.
For anybody who is doubting this appeal, or thinks this is just a way to ‘buy a house’ you could not be further from the truth.
Elaine has spent her entire adult life fighting for equines, rescuing 100’s of horses and ponies, speaking up when others haven’t, always ALWAYS putting the horses first NO MATTER WHAT.
We will not go down without a fight, we will do and try everything in our power and remit to save our sanctuary because what else can we do?
Yards like ours are pretty much impossible to find, this sanctuary has the most amazing healing powers. You only need to look back at some of our rescues stories to see that for yourselves.
If you don’t believe that what we are trying to achieve is for the right reasons then that is your opinion, but please just move along and remove yourself from our page.
We have enough to deal with right now than having to try and justify our appeal.
We are trying so hard to stay positive, and largely that is only possible because of the wonderful amazing army of supporters we have, and for that we will be forever grateful .
🙌🏻

Thank you for reading this, I hope it clears up a few things for the people who don’t seem to believe we are genuine.
Thank you to every single supporter again. You are the beating heart of this charity.

I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions:

Are you able to rent alternative premises like Nutjob asked if you are unable to raise the full amount?

Can any other charities take any of your horses?

What happens to the GFM funds in the event the £500k cannot be raised?

Thank you

This has just been copied from FB, so nobody here is probably able to answer your questions.

I think the question of renting somewhere else has been answered. The equines have very special needs so can't just rent a field somewhere. I think they are trying to find somewhere suitable.

They have also said on their FB page that if the target isn't reached they will return the individual donations.

It has been stated that if they fail to raise the amount needed the monies raised will be returned to the donators. I know the GFM wasnt crystal clear as why the money was needed but I think they were trying to protect the owner of the property from any negative comments because not only will he be homeless but he recently lost his wife.

have they updated the GFM?

I've just checked - yes, it looks like Sam's update from today has been added underneath.

I fully support people being noble and protecting other people's privacy as I think we all should, but I think in this situation it's a bit tricky as people are being asked for support without technically knowing the full story which for some might limit how much they're prepared to donate, if anything at all. Reading between the lines I wonder if they're protecting a third party with the best of intentions, but it's unfortunately making this side of the picture seem a little confusing which could be offputting for some people.

I also think it's difficult for people to understand why an equine charity is not considering trying to rehome the residents - the thing is it's a sanctuary rather than a rehoming centre I think, with the focus having been to take on and support older or compromised horses in a secure home for life. I think they have rehomed those that could be over the years, but not those who can't reasonably be. And when older horses have had a stable home and friends for a long time, I can fully understand why rehoming might not be a reasonable step for them, especially when you have promised them a secure home for life. And especially at this time of year, when other charities are coming into the worst and most expensive time of the year. AND other charities would likely need to assess costs for those horses against costs/rehoming potential for other horses who might be be younger with less health issues, or at least only temporary ones.

(For the record, I have donated to the fund, but can appreciate why others in the wider horsey world or maybe even outside of it who perhaps haven't known of or followed EMW might currently be hesitant.)

I am astonished that anyone can have a £500k debt against their property, and not know about it
It happened to my SIL, not a debt of this magnitude, but enough to have the bailiffs at the door to repo their home. My brother stopped paying the mortgage, then the interest mounts up, every letter they send adds to the dept, there are late fees for every missed payment. My brother obviously knew there was a problem but put the unopened letters in a draw and was able to ignore the situation for several months. SIL thought everything was OK until the knock. I can understand how caring for a terminally ill wife could result in this, especially if she was previous dealing with finances. It's a very sad situation to be in for all those involved.

Good luck to EMW and their residents
It's possible the actual debt is much lower. I know if I found a sudden £100k hole in my budget due to an unknown debt, I'd have to sell my house to fund it. Happens all the time with IHT.

If the place was in his wifes name and she didn't leave a will then the husband is only entitled to a set amount not sure what that is exactly but somewhere in the region of £150000, and the rest goes to the government ,so if the estate is worth £650000 that will be why there's a debt of £500000. That needs paying. Only my take on it don't actually know if this is the scenario here.
