Very sadly I have decided to retire my old hunting pony, and he attended his last autumn hunting meet last sat.

Although he is only rising 17yrs, his wind has caused concern for the last couple of seasons, but usually by Opening Meet he has overcome this. However this season I have really struggled to get him wind fit, and last saturdays hill country was just too much for him.

I am very lucky that his sharer wants to buy him, and keep him at my home, where he will retire gracefully as a 'happy hacker' and want for nothing. His new owner is hugely excited about the fact he will no longer needs to be hogged - little does she know!!!!

So hears to you 'Jack' - thanks for the 5 seasons where you have never had a day's lamness or lost shoe, for every obstacle that you flew over (even if I was hesitant!), for every gate you helped me open, for every hunt horse you have held, and most importantly, for always bringing us both home safely.

You will be missed.....x

That is a nice tribute, sounds like you had a little gem there. So nice that he can continue to be happy and useful and enjoy life a little less energetically.

What a lovely tribute, and how good to have a happy ending - hogged or not. Your bit about getting you home safely really made me well up. I had a wonderful hunting pony once, and I used to look at him in his box after a days' hunting and think of all he had got me through, over and under, and in our case had often a long, long hack home as we didn't have a horsebox or trailer.

Ponies like that have a price above pearls. Happy retirement to him.

Feel for you, my old'n is nearly 19 and a canter up hill was almost too much for him so he'll be retired from the hills.......BUT.....he was awesome in the Vale last time out there!! Try that may give a slightly longer career.
