I'm almost in tears. We were told today at Badminton Horse Trials by the Mitsubishi reps that the venerable Shogun is being pulled from sale, as it it is proving difficult to impossible to get it through the latest emission regs.

There is a new ''Shogun Sport' variant on sale. The less said about that, the better.

*Off to sob at our year 2014 and yr 2000 examples, assuring them of a good home to the rest of their natural lives*. Our Shogun/ Ifor 510 Classic towing combo now looks like a prematurely discontinued classic :(.

Best towing vehicle I had was a Shogun, mind it was petrol so somewhat heavy on the consumption and in those days we were all being told to buy diesel to save the planet. I did miles and miles of towing in that Shogun, it was comfortable and had a powerful engine although with my heavy double trailer it was probably at the top end of its towing capacity. It never let me down, even after being in a crash, OH hammered out the panels, steering was straightened up and it went on for years afterwards. Much nicer than subsequent Discoveries.

The last we saw of our Shogun was at a collective sale, a buyer beware sort of sale. A lady we knew bought it for her son who was visiting England for 3 months one winter, after checking with OH that it was OK and when the son went back she put it back in the sale. She agreed that it was a lovely vehicle, but a bit heavy on the petrol consumption.

I nearly bought one recently. I didn't in the end because the insurance quotes I got were too high so I got a Mitsubishi Outlander instead. I still have a soft spot for the Shogun.

NOOOOOO!!! I've always said we wouldn't have any other car for towing and family life. :( :(

Silly being fond of a car but I really am fond of our Shogun.

Oh no! We're rather enamoured of our 6 year old one, with lovely leather seats. Does not like towing for fuel consumption going up hill (yard on a hill) it has the onboard computer...16mpg is not good, but when not towing can get well over 30mpg. We like the fact it is a good solid reliable car.

Loss of another brilliant work vehicle.

I had an old Toyota Landcruiser for 20 years, when it finally gave up the ghost I looked at the new version and was so dissappointed.
Better not say what I think of the new style Discovery ...

I need something that will tow, but also has a proper big boot for very large dogs, and the options for the future are ... non existent!

Sad Times.. I am another who loves my Shogun we have the 3.2 diesel version, and agree it is a bit fuel thirsty towing 17-22 mpg but does a super job of it with my Ifor 510 and is so comfortable and easy to drive .plus plenty boot room for my three dogs and crate :-)

I just bought a 12 yr old Mitsubishi L200 with a canopy, that looks as if it is going to be just the job in the "tow/big boot capacity" department :-)

I will have to replace my car at some point and my first choice was a Shogun. While I was at the garage I had a test drive of the L200 as well and I really liked it but felt it would be to long with the trailer on the back. I may not have a choice if the Shogun is going to be phased out.

WHAT!!!! Oh no!!! My 12 year old short w/b Mitzi is my pride and joy!! We were just about to think of getting a replacement as well (another one, of course). Nothing like them as pulling machines. Very sad indeed .....

.... goes off to pour a conciliatory G&T .... well ... any excuse really ..... :-)

Never mind, just get a Landrover, they are so much better ;) :)

I changed from a Landrover to a Shogun which is a far superior vehicle. I will not be going back to LR when the Shogun dies. It is only 4yrs old though so should do me for another 15 years with a bit of luck.

Found this out late last year when we went to look at buying new Shogun. Garage talked us out of it, and we ended up buying an L200 instead. Really happy with it, but when with trailer I am force to be reckoned with due to sheer length. Looked at LR Defender and Disco but couldn’t justify the cost for a used LR against a spanking new L200.
Shogun Sport is ok, the back is ugly as hell though.

Sold mine on earlier this year ad it was just ridiculously expensive to run. I did love it though and miss it so much.

I wondered why the Shogun Hollow had an Outlander (or maybe is was a Shogun Sport?!) displayed there! This might answer it :D

We have a 2003 Shogun which has just driven almost 1,000 miles in a week through Skye and the Western Isles. We both adore it, it's such a comfy big car and a wonderful towbeast. Its only disadvantage is a VERY thirsty 3.5l petrol engine! When it dies OH is planning to replace it with an imported one.

O dear 😢 love our 3.5 swb warrior petrol use it most days hauling 2.5 tons of wood shavings from mills only does about 12 to gallon but loads of power 😊 luckily still some nice ones still about friends just bought a long wheel base new ,I would like a swb barbarian next if funds allow! ☺

Love love love my 2005 3.2 Shogun Field, tows like a dream! Would get another and don't find it that thirsty unless in 4wd - previous car was a tiny less than 1 litre engine hatchback and the difference in miles that i can get between the two is only about 20 per £35 of fuel. That said I've not had a very new car which i imagine has changed significantly in recent years! Sad that it will be no longer!

The only real down side i found was when i tree fell on the car in high winds, new panels are horribly expensive new! Definitely sad that it won't be produced any longer as would be my choice of 4x4.

I had a 22yo Pajero (import version of Shogun), LWB, for about 6 months, before it died of an apparently rare and inexplicable engine fault. I loved that thing; it didn't even notice my trailer with 2 horses (or a chamber organ and an opera set), and I called it the "Brontosaurus", due to its size and antiquity. And now its breed will follow the other large dinosaurs into extinction! :(

Jokes aside, though, the point raised by SpringArising needs to be considered. It seems to me that the market in terms of environmentally responsible cars is considering mainly normal commuter or family transportation. Which companies are looking into development for agricultural or country use? The need for heavy towing vehicles won't just evaporate with diesel bans and emission controls...

The other point seems to be that often, only the people that actually don't need a big towing car can afford a new one. Horsey peeps usually seem to get the older cast-offs!

Sad to hear as in my eyes the shogun is the last of the proper 4x4s now the defender has gone, the new LR spend more time in the garage than on the road! Ours tows everything and anything and can still get the whole family in (plus dogs!) Mines only 18 months old so I best start looking after her!.
