End of the road for your horse?

Hi. I'm writing a feature for Horse magazine on horses that can't be ridden anymore, due to old age or illness, and what you can do with them. It's basically to offer advice/support for readers worrying what they're going to do with their horse - should they put them to sleep, put them out for retirement? What are the other options? Blood banks? I'd really like to talk to anyone that's been in this position.
