I have managed to break in and ride away my hooligan Tarquin and thought I might give him a little go at some endurance, I did a few 20 milers with my older horse about five years ago and found this really helped him. I was only going to do the shortest pleasure ride type things run by the Endurance people to begin with but was reading Horse magazine (may have been horse and rider or your horse) and their piece on endurance said that you could not use a standing martingale or draw reins. Now I have to use a standing on Tarquin at the mo to prevent him panicking when he gets excited and running off. He is now on a loose standing and this only acts as a reminder. I cannot and will not use a running as he's very sensitive in the mouth ( I ride in a rubber snaffle) and in a panic situation something pulling on his mouth really will not help my cause. So could anyone tell me if it is just the competitive rides that these rules apply to or all of their events.

The article in Your Horse was wrong... you are allowed to use standing martingales in both competitive and non-competitve classes. They were correct in saying that draw reins are prohibted though...

Cheers for that, was thinking it was a little odd as I was sure I'd seen lots of Arabs with them last time I ventured into the world of endurance, sadle the Endurance GB website offered no answers on permitted tack so had to ask on here.

I would have thought no standing martingales would be a bit mean - I can remember our old arab whacking me in the face a few times!!

Another one too huffy to use a running martingale
