interested this year in doing a wee bit of endurance riding just for fun, as have always been interested in it.

what tack is best?

also any pics of yours in there tack or on endurance ride would love to see.

Hi,

I've never done endurance as such but I do an awful lot of hacking and will be looking to have a go at endurance.

I have a fantastic bridle it's a Zilco one, it's headcollar and bridle in one so great for when your horse goes for the trot up, no need to remove the bridle. And there synthetic and come in loads of colours so chuck it in the washing machine and done! No extra tack cleaning :) I think they also do martingales too.

A lot of people seem to use treeless saddles for endurance although I'm not completely sold on them I must admit, I would say a good synthetic saddle like wintec or thorowgood would be a good choice as there nice and lightweight so it would help with the horse, heavy tack would = quicker fatigue. Thorowgood used to an endurance saddle not sure if they do anymore. I think torrison treeless saddles are a popular choice too.

Numnah wise I would probably use something comfortable and soft maybe one with sheepskin or something, also if my horse had to wear boots lightweight ones would be of choice.

I was roped in to doing endurance last year.... nothing to heavy, just for some fun. My friend does it at a high level and has specific made synthetic bridle and wide stirrups. But I just did it in my normal tack. I enjoyed and a year on I may invest in tack now..... the most important thing I found I needed was a drink carrier for me.... I use numnah to mach weather. In winter thicker sheepskin if it's hot I use just a saddle pad cause the thicker the sweatier . Hope this helps.

Well fitting saddle and bridle for horse

For yourself I would say
Riding tights, jods tend to rub
Water bottle carrier
Endurance stirrups
Bum bag for hoof pick, cereal bar etc

Treeless saddles unless the better more expensive ones arent really great for endurance as a lot of the cheaper ones have stirrup leathers as a single loop bridging right over the horses back inside the saddle. Also you may spend most of the time in trot, and treeless saddles arent ideal for rising trot as the idea of them is a light pressure in the stirrups.

I would recommend a lightweight leather or synthetic saddle like a Thorowgood for basic endurance - the latter esp as weather and mud wont ruin it and it is less extra weight for the horse - provided you can find one to fit - but then they are easily resellable if not anyway.

Bridle wise something like Zilco or Plas Equestrians convertable headcollar/bridles are good and not too pricey so I would spend the money on that more than a special saddle.

You might also want to get a small first aid kit with a belt loop, whistle, compass and clear plastic zip up a4 folder for your map, also the first 3 are generally hireable/borrowable from the secretary at the venue, its useful to have it.

You will love it!

Your saddle is your choice, a good GP saddle is fine and as long as it fits the horse and you that will be fine.

Saddles can range from a few hundred to a couple of thousand for a purpose Endurance one. Bridles come in different colours to your own combination.

Look at a good website such as Performance Equestrian
http://www.performance-equestrian.com/. They have everything you will want.

If you want to do some Endurance you could get hold of your local group. Also look at the main site www.endurancegb.co.uk
