Loads of information here, and there should be a branch in your area that may have its own website, which will tell you more about rides in your area and how to get started.

Don't know what area you are but to start with you may like sport endurance especially if you don't know anything about it? What area are you?

Look here.
Any type of horse can do endurance if you put the work in to get them properly fit, tho obviously some are better suited (eg arabs) than others.
There are set speed rides, where you aim for a certain average speed to get an award, or races, which are - well - races. Distances start at 20 miles IIRC. There is veterinary assessment throughout.
But you would probably be best off trying a few local pleasure rides to get the feel of it, and building up the work and distances gradually.

Sounds like a good aim - take it nice and steady and I'm sure you'll have a great time. It's incredibly satisfying. I guess at least you're able to do hillwork where you are?!
