Have found lately that when schooling H has been quite lazy & sometimes not overly off the leg. Was wondering if there is anything I could feed to make him a bit more "sparky" but he is very nervy so don't want anything that will turn him even more sensitive/ nervy/ knobbish to deal with. Or are there any exercises I can do to get him thinking more forward.
Hacking out alone results in lots of forward momentum on the way home!

Also has anyone tried the Uncle Jimmy licks as he loves lickits but thought I may try the U.J's ones for a change but reading what's in them wondering if they may make him go psycho as lots of cereals etc!

I don't know the answer, unfortunately, but when I read the title of the thread, I could only imagine what it was about! Lickits weren't it :D

I used to have a horse that sounds like yours; sharp (on the ground and when ridden), strong when hacking but just not enough 'oomph' in the school. He was an ISH. I was advised to try him on oats and started with just a handful; he was fine on that so I gradually increased it to 1/3 scoop a day. They made a very subtle difference - a bit more 'useful' energy without being silly or sharper, and he wasn't any different out hacking. He was a horse that couldn't tolerate anything sugary (made him hyperactive :)) so oats were a more sensible option.

I wouldn't personally give my horse lickits or similar - way too much cereal/sugar if he's going to eat the whole thing at once. But I'm just a bit paranoid about these things causing colic etc. Saying that my horse does like lickit treat bars but I only give him one square at a time, I prefer to give him vegetables or bake my own treats.

Unbalanced, I would hang up a swede, but whenever he has swede he seems to knob even more than normal! Strange creature! May try making a toy with carrots and apples on a string though...

Caol Ila, just re read the title & it does sound a bit naughty! Uninte

Stupid phone!!

Naughtiness of title was unintended! ;)

Tash 88, was thinking about possibly oats as could always just give a handful in each feed, only problem is they come in such large bags, if they send him nuts I'm stuck with it! Need trial sized bag! :(

That's true, do you have anyone who will buy them off you if he doesn't get on with them? Or know anyone who can give you some to try? I actually remember borrowing some off a friend first. Tbh I think your horse will be alright with them, and a handful in each feed isn't much at all.
