Often they smell quite different, imported leather (and let's be honest we are usually talking Indian leather here) can have an almost plastic feel to it, and after some use in many cases the dye will rub off.
For the budget though, some imported leather is fine and will last for years.
smell is a good indicater.
foriegn has a sweet sicky smell.
if you hold one against the other you will prob know.
imo foriegn leather is unsafe but you may get away with martingale or something but deff not stirrup leathers or bridle parts or reins.
some english leather can be cr*p,it all to do with the tanning? i think.
Im wanting to sell a leather headcollar on ebay that i was given about 6 months ago but i cant tell if its english leather or imported. Im useless at telling the difference and dont want to go misleading anyone
It definately smells different and its often shinyish on one side and if you bend the shinier side it sort of wrinkles/creases. Also the buckles can look cheaper. Ive had both English and imported headcollars and the Imported one stretched like mad and eventually broke. A lot of English leather is stamped somewhere. The only way round it if you are unsure is not to say its one or the other when you put it on Ebay..
it smells differen, english leather tends to be more flexible, les faults and if ita a brown or havanna head coller then have a look at the edge of the leather on the indian leather it is often black.
Also wipe it with saddle soap if you get any dye onto the cloth then it is deffiantely imported.
Agree with the smell of leather, but also, how much did you pay for it? if it was less than about £50 it is highly unlikely to be English leather (although obviously possible)
