Does anyone have an English bull terrier/experience of the breed? My boyfriend is looking for a friend for his Akita. I have 2 whippets who she gets on great with but feel she needs something a bit "sturdier" to play with (plus she can't keep up with the pace of the whippets when they have a race together) and when we go out they are separated by a baby gate (only because she is big and strong and may accidently hurt the whippets.

While he would love another large breed we agree it probably isn't too practical for little old me! So we thought maybe a bull terrier or similar? Strong and sturdy and boisterous enough for her to play with but still small enough that I could handle them both? Open to other recommendations etc.

We had one (a dog). The standards are incredibly strong and powerful and can actually get quite big. If you're looking for something manageable I'd look into getting a mini (although they're quite hard to find).

Ours was very aloof, stubborn and boisterous. We thought we got a bad egg but the more people we spoke to about them the more we realised that's sort of their character (although I'm sure they're not ALL like that).

If you want something sturdy, loveable but intelligent and willing to please, I'd recommend a Staffy over an EBT :)

Thank you! The Akita has all of the traits mentioned above! Stubborn is an understatement lol! Compared to the whippets who are so reactive and eager to please! Lol but I love her all the same!

I really like staffies but BF wasn't keen at first! He is coming round to the idea though!

I prefer the look of an EBT but I think staffies are easier dogs. My m-in-law had an EBT bitch, they tend to be a lot smaller, she was lovely and very good natured but that was 20 years ago now so they are probably bigger now. I like the minis but they seem to have more health issues than the full size ones.

I like the look of the EBT but have had some not great experiences of them. That could just be circumstance but it would make me do tons of research on them beforehand and to know the parent dogs very well tbh.
