Enlarged testicle, anybody have experience of this?

My 22 yr old stallion has suddenly got one ball a lot bigger, and very hard compared to the other one. No chance of it being an injury, and he looks extremely well, and no bothered about it being handled. The vet isn't over confident of the outcome, saying he may need a full castration and that it would likely be under GA, which I don't want to put him through. Has anybody on here have any experience of this, and the outcome?

Not of the enlarged testicle but yes to a very bad summer of cleaning and flies for you....

Presumably the vet ruled out torsion (twisting of the testicle within the scrotum)? I don't think that would explain the hardness reported - unless it had gone on for long enough for fibrosis to develop.

I've only seen testicular torsion once. It was a 180 degree twist and there were no signs of pain. It was easily reversed.
