Hope somebody can help, I've recently moved house and moved my two ponies onto a field 16 miles from my new house , I've just been offered a field at back of my house it's just an acre and abit hilly and not a lush green field its more like moorland, would it be suitable for two ponies one 14hh and the other 13.1hh both good doers in fact both on the fat side, I dont normally keep them out 24/7 for this reason ,usually about 6 hours then put in a stable with hay, I'd love nothing more to have them close to home , I like to ride them at least 4 times a week which I can't at the moment and I could ride whenever possible if they were closer. would this field be viable if they were stabled too , help!!!!

Thanks for the reply, Ive been out of my mind worrying about what's best for my ponies , I don't like where they are now but didn't have time to be fussy with moving house , yes I would top up with hay, wish there was a little more field , but I will be saving on fuel costs too I've been driving twice a day doing approx 64 miles just because I love them both that much and worry like crazy as my ponies are on there own at the moment so nobody to check on them for me.

They will do just fine behind your house.

An acre is actually quite a lot when you look at it, hopefully it being hilly will mean that it won't get boggy. Be prepared to feed hay, perhaps all year round, but the savings from fuel alone will cover that, and the peace of mind having them close is immeasurable.

:)

As long as you maintain it well , maybe divide it into two by tape so you can rest one side and use the other.

We define the odds with the amount of land to horses but it copes to well which is why we have too much grass.

If the ponies are out 24 7 then obviously they will eat it down.
I would do 1 month on one month off and see how it fairs.

The rule of an acre a horse is for those living out all the time with no other feed. I manage to keep 3 and 3 shetlands on just over 2 acres. If you divide it up with fencing or tape and rest in rotation it will be fine. poo picking is obviously important in a small area, as will additional feed. Sounds like you will be bringiing them in part of the day and night anyway so it will easily be enough

If you are going to part stable and the land is reasonably well draining then you should be fine with just an acre if you manage it well.
But be warned, having ponies at the bottom of your garden is a massive timewaster!!!
