Does anybody know where abattoirs are in the uk that take horses for meat. This is a genuine enquiry for research purposes. I have been looking on the internet but getting more animal aid things etc.

Potters is near Bristol and Turners is in cheshire somewhere, think they advertise ain H&H. Both take for meat and pay out per kilo.

Thank you for that, most helpful. Do you know if there any more in the uk? I have organised a talk on Equine Euthanasia from making the decision to lasting memories to be given by a slaughterman and a vet. All information will be available on the night and I want to cover every aspect of what anybody could want - not just personal views. I am struggling with Abattoirs and hunts.

Anyone else before i go. Is there only two remaining that take horses? I am tried th einternet but some searches brought up graphic images. I only wish to know where they are to pass on the information.

There are only two licenced horse abattoirs in the UK. Potters and Turners. Definitely only two.

I believe these might be the only two.

Of course local knackers all over the country will take horses once shot/euthanased but only for disposal not meat (eg the fallen livestock scheme for farms does also cover horses - I have that as a specific category).

The issue is the lack of appetite for eating horses in the UK and (maybe more important as they could go into petfood instead) the fact that most horses in the UK have probably had medication at some time or another eg bute that would render them ineligible to go for human consumption at least, and might (dont know) stop them going for petfood.

There's only the two now. I know for a fact as I read it only last week and commented to my husband as we're really close to Potters.

That is brilliant. Thank you everyone for all of your help. I wanted to make sure I covered every angle. I do have the laws on transporting horses to an abattoir so I hope there is nothing else.
It has took me hours of looking lol

Turners do a put down at home service too but will probably charge/pay you less. They normally advertise in the back of H&H.
