Well, today I have entered my first competition with my loan horse. It's really low key and there was a line left after my OH had entered his share horse so thought why the hell not!

It's fairly calm for a first outing. You go into the indoor in groups of 3 and get to warm in for 20mins. Then you do your test whilst the others watch, and then you watch the others do theirs then you go! I'm doing Prelim 4 so nothing too complicated, but it's a start!

trouble is it's been 15 years or so since I competed and I have none of the kit. So (and I hope this doesn't count as advertising) I am in need of the following.

1 tweed jacket, 1 cream pair breeches, 1 stock and pin, hairnet and boots.

Now the stock, pin and hairnet and gloves I think I should be able to do, BUT I don't have the boots, jacket or breeches. Funds are very tight and I'm not a skinny min so I need help! I'm a size 16 - 18 and have fairly substantial boobs so would need a jacket to fit such a monstrosity, Mountain Horse breeches in a 30 fit (but I know they give a huge amount) so think a normal size 34 in breeches....it's my calves that are the problem. they are about 17 inches at their widest point and I have size 6 feet.....

So...fellow H&H'ers, if there was anyone out there that might have anything second hand that might do can you let me know?? I have 2 weeks! ARGH!!!!!

i was in teh same position before xmas with my first sj for 15 years - i went onto the robinsons sale got some white breeches for a tenner, ebay for a tweed coat for 15, and a shirt for 5! otherwise ask mates - they always help a first timer!

i might have a jacket suitable, but i dont go home untill next weekend so cant check unitll then.
I also Might have a pair of boots that might fit, but again cant check untill next weekend!

If you don't get anywhere on here, the most cost effective way of buying it all would be...

Rubber riding boots not leather - they'd be perfectly acceptable for what you have described and aren't anywhere near as expensive. I have horribly wide calves and a decent tack shop found me a pair wide enough.

Robinsons do cheap joddys in cream and beige up to a 36 I think.

Jacket will be most expensive thing - you could probably have navy, black or tweed (again check with the venue) so see if you can borrow one of those, or again ebay... or are the sales still on?

You could save the money on buying a stock, pin etc and borrow a suitable coloured tie from a willing man and put that money towards buying the rest maybe?

Don't worry too much, if its an event for novices etc they should be pretty accomodating, just ask.

And let us know how you get on in the dressage - good luck! x

LOL naturally, you speak sense. I'm sure as long as you look neat and tidy it doesn't matter

I'm quite excited about it!

I am quite large on top managed to find a jacket on ebay for £10 it fits nicely as well! it was made by a brand called sherwood forest I think. I found all the ones in the tack shops way too expensive. Also as said above rubber boots are perfectly acceptable

Picture of me in £10 jacket!

I was in exactly the same position as you in Nov before my first outing, I bought a pair of cheap cream jods £15, thin cotton cream gloves £3.99, rubber boots on ebay £5, jacket on ebay (I'm not small!) £2.99 and a shirt and tie in oxfam for a couple of quid! Don't think we look too bad!

Lots of luck, when is it?

Gaiters will be fine, I got beat last year in showing, I was wearing my old and very expensive, shiney, long leather boots with garter straps, girl who beat me had short boots and half chaps! BUMMER!!

Hi Trish, it's on Feb 10th, which is stupidly the day after the Hunt Ball!

Not keen on gaiters...also, haven't got any short leather boots so would have to shell out for them too.....

Have found some boots...equetector....they give you 10% discount for being a BHS member!

I can't help with the things you need (ebay?) but thought i would let you know i think i am entered into the same competition!

I have not been before but others on my yard have and they say it is very relaxed so don't worry to much (they also don't plait!!)

Hi Bea, I've been before with my OH. It's very relaxed, no plaiting is great!! TBH you don't actually see any other horses apart from the others in your group. It's very quiet. Don't forget your SAE as tehy post your score sheets (though my OH picked his up as he was HC).

Good luck!

I could lend you everything as we are about the same size, if you want

Ebay are really good so i'd look on there too. My long boots are Mountain horse (I have huge calf's and short legs

What a shame you are so far away!

On Wednesday I am going to the Horse Resource, a second hand horsey shop, so will see what I can find.

Re the mountain horse boots....which ones do you have and would they fit a 17.5" calf?

LOL didn't look to see how far away your were

I've got the Mountain Horse High Riders and they fit my calf (42cms). There are some jackets going very cheaply on ebay at the moment in the right size.
